“Understood.” They knew the stakes were high and that a cautious approach was necessary. Rushing in could be disastrous, especially when people’s lives were on the line.

An idea was already forming in Ruby’s mind, but it was still too early to share it with them.

“Anything else?” she asked, looking up.

They both shook their heads.

Fanny gestured toward her breakfast. “Go on, finish eating.”

Hayley just pursed her lips, a knowing, teasing glint in her eyes. She didn’t say a word, but her expression said it all.

Ruby felt an inexplicable warmth creep up her neck. She shot Hayley a warning glare. “Alright, get out of here, you two.”

They left, laughing.

The moment the door closed, the relaxed expression vanished from Ruby’s face. She couldn’t believe Hanley had managed to keep a whole factory hidden from Frieda, and from her. She was only learning about it now. A heavy feeling settled in her chest.

As for the idea she had… now that she was staying at Grayson Manor, it would be much easier to uncover Hanley’s secrets than it would be from the outside.

She mulled it over, her brow furrowed in concentration.

The sudden ringing of her phone on the desk shattered her thoughts. She glanced at the caller ID: Hanley.

“Ruby, I’m getting old, and I’m not really sure what you young people like these days. Why don’t you come pick out the new bedding yourself? Your mother and Gennifer are here, but since it’s your room, we thought it should be your choice.” His voice was smooth and gentle.

Speak of the devil.

“Fine. Where are you?” Ruby’s mind raced. She agreed immediately, without a hint of hesitation.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, clearly one of surprise. Hanley had grown so accustomed to her rejections that her easy acceptance caught him off guard.

“Great, great! I’ll send you the location right now,” he said, his voice filled with delight.

Ruby looked at the address that popped up on her screen, grabbed her coat, and headed for the door. She’d only taken a few steps when Sylas, who had been waiting impatiently outside, brightened and fell into step beside her. “Where are you going?”
