Cynthia nodded, naturally letting go of his arm and walking ahead.

Dominic reached out, meaning to take her hand, but only grasped air. The woman who’d been clinging to him just moments before was already a few steps in front, leaving his hand suspended awkwardly in midair.

He watched Cynthia’s retreating back, his eyes darkening. Chest rising and falling, he finally dropped his hand and caught up with her.

They got into the car.

From the side, Dominic produced a velvet jewelry box and opened it.

Inside, a strand of South Sea pearls rested quietly on the dark lining.

While Cynthia was still staring in surprise, Dominic had already taken out the necklace and held it out to her.

“Put it on.”

Cynthia looked down at her bare neck. She was, after all, attending as Dominic’s date—if she looked too plain, it would only embarrass him. Without a word, she accepted the necklace and tried to fasten it herself.
