Cynthia’s hands tightened around her seatbelt.

“I asked… how much this outfit cost, I—”

“Be quiet.”

Dominic’s chest rose and fell with restrained irritation. He set his jaw and restarted the car, his face cold.

Cynthia lowered her voice, not wanting to take something so expensive from him for nothing. “I just… I really like it, so I’d like to keep it.”

Dominic kept his eyes fixed on the road, his reply low and clipped. “I don’t have any strange fetishes.”

Wait… weren’t they talking about clothes? How did this turn into a conversation about fetishes?

Dominic glanced sideways at her confused expression and added, voice even colder, “I don’t collect women’s worn clothes. If you like it, keep it. If not, toss it. I’m not hurting for a few bucks.”

“Oh,” Cynthia murmured, then muttered under her breath, “You could just say you’re giving it to me, you know.”

Dominic shot her a look. “You’re already wearing it. Do I really need to say it out loud?”

Cynthia nodded, “Yes, you do.”

He glared at her.

She bit her lip, speaking even softer, “A clear answer would put my mind at ease.”

With that, she turned her head, gazing out the window, lapsing into silence.

The truth was, she felt more and more out of place in this world. The realization left her restless.

It wasn’t really Dominic’s fault for not spelling things out. In his circle, once something was worn, that was as good as a gift. No one would ever ask about paying for a dress, or offer to reimburse him. She’d probably just embarrassed herself—and annoyed him.
