Cynthia’s cheeks flushed a brilliant red, yet Dominic answered her question with a composure so serious, it left her completely at a loss.
There wasn’t the faintest trace of teasing in those deep-set eyes of his; he looked as if he were simply stating a mundane fact. That only made Cynthia’s embarrassment worse—she couldn’t even muster up the strength to snap back, so she just sat there, blushing furiously.
She clenched her teeth in frustration, silently reminding herself it was pointless to argue with him. Whenever she tried, she only ended up more flustered.
So Cynthia said nothing more, and buried herself in her breakfast, spooning the warm soup from her bowl.
Dominic glanced at her, his tone dry and unhurried. “Careful, or you’ll end up snorting that soup.”
Cynthia nearly choked, but managed to keep her composure.
That was when Assistant Frank’s call came through.
She glanced at the screen, swiped to answer, and pressed the phone to her ear.
“Miss Tremaine.”
Frank’s voice rang crisply from the other end.
“Yes?” Cynthia replied.
Once he was sure it was her, Frank lowered his voice and reported, “Mr. Shepard has been trying to reach you since yesterday. He’s already come by the office several times.”
“And somehow, he found out you’re at The Capital today. He’s threatening to come after you.”
Cynthia pressed her fingers to her brow, feeling a headache coming on. “Understood.”
What on earth is Benedict Shepard thinking? Why is he being so persistent?
“Did he say what he wants?”
Frank replied respectfully, “No, he didn’t specify.”
Cynthia exhaled slowly, then looked up to find Dominic watching her, his gaze cold and piercing. She hesitated, then murmured quietly into the phone, “Stall him, Frank. Don’t let him come to The Capital.”
They’d been deliberately letting people believe she and Dominic were involved, using his reputation to their advantage. If Benedict showed up and old connections came to light, her sister’s plans could be jeopardized.
