Athena felt like she was going insane. All she wanted was to avenge him, to drag everyone who’d wronged him straight to hell. But she couldn’t rush—she needed a plan.

She took a deep breath and tried to steady her shaking hands.

After leaving the chapel, Tyler called, asking where she was. Athena’s lips trembled as she answered. She wanted to ask Tyler if their arrangement still stood, if he’d really tell her the truth about Kerwin’s death. But she couldn’t let Tyler know she was already aware of what the Keller family had done.

She had to tread carefully.

Tyler’s voice was unusually gentle, probably in a good mood after last night. There was even a hint of a smile as he asked, “Where’d you run off to this time?”

“I’ll be back soon. I want to stop by my old high school. I had a close friend there who’s been struggling with depression. I just want to check in on her.”

“I’ll drive you.”

“No, Tyler. I’d rather go alone. This is something I need to do myself. Just focus on finding out the truth about Kerwin’s death.”

Tyler fell silent.

A wry smile flickered in Athena’s eyes. She said nothing more, focusing on the road.

Her high school friend had gone through bullying alongside her. Before Athena became a target, Maggie and her gang had picked on this girl. Later, Athena had stepped in—and the bullies’ attention shifted to her. In a way, Athena had saved her friend, but the damage had already been done. Her mental health had started to unravel long before, and her home life was even worse than Athena’s. Her parents’ blatant favoritism toward her brother was sickening.

Her friend's name was Lindsay. Her younger brother was intellectually disabled—a hulking six-foot-two man who always drooled and muttered to himself. Because of his condition, he’d never found a girlfriend. At some point, their parents became so desperate that they actually suggested Lindsay should have his child.

Lindsay, already struggling with depression, had called Athena in tears. But Athena was too lost in her own grief over Kerwin’s death at the time, and hadn’t been able to help. She never did find out how that situation ended.

Lindsay had always been kind—the only person who ever truly saw Athena as a friend. Two bullied girls, clinging to each other, convinced they could face anything as long as they stuck together.
