Selene turned to see Daph standing there in her teddy bear pajamas, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“Morning, sweetie,” Selene said, walking over to smooth her daughter’s messy hair. “Did you sleep well?”

“Uh-huh!” Daph nodded vigorously. “Uncle Luke brought me home, and I fell asleep right away!”

Daph had been training hard at the sports center recently. When Selene wasn’t busy, she would take her, but with the demanding project at QuanTech, the task had fallen to Luke Holloway. The provincial team coach saw potential in Daph and was training her seriously, and Luke had a far better understanding of the technical aspects of sports than Selene did. Selene’s presence was mostly for moral support, whereas Luke could spot technical flaws in an instant and even seemed to anticipate when a fall might be dangerous. She was more than comfortable leaving Daph in his care.

“Mommy!” Daph’s voice pulled Selene from her thoughts. The little girl’s eyes were sparkling. “The teacher said there’s a Family Day activity at school next week for the holiday. Do you… do you think you could come and make pies with me?”

Daph hesitated as she asked. She knew how busy her mother had been. To make up for it, Selene had started bringing her to the office on weekends when she didn’t have practice. They were together, but Daph had seen firsthand how much work her mother had. Her voice was full of tentative hope as she looked up, waiting for an answer.

Selene’s heart melted. She knelt to be at eye level with her daughter. “Of course I have time to make pies with my Daph.”

“Yay!” Daph nearly jumped with excitement. “The teacher said we need to bring two parents to the event. So you can decide if you want to bring Uncle Luke or Mr. Shaw. The choice is yours!”
