Selene called Leo. A cool, deep voice answered, crisp and clear like a mountain spring flowing over stones. “Selene. What is it?” He sounded as if he’d been expecting her call.

“Leo, are you free next week?” Selene quickly explained the school’s Family Day event. “I know how valuable your time is, and this might not be on your agenda. But Daph and I would really love it if you and Altair could come.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Selene held her breath, picturing Leo frowning slightly as he mentally reviewed his calendar. Just as she was bracing for a polite refusal, he spoke. “Alright. I’ll bring Altair.”

He’d agreed? Just like that? Selene was surprised but also felt it made sense. Leo had made many compromises to help Altair adjust to a more normal life.

“That’s wonderful,” she said, her voice filled with delight.

Leo could hear her talking to Daph in the background. “Your Great-Uncle Leo said yes! We’re going to make pies with him and Altair.”

“Hooray!!” Daph’s cheerful shout came through the phone, so full of energy that Leo could almost picture her bouncing with joy. A faint smile touched his lips.

“I’ll let you go then, Leo,” Selene said.

“How is the project at QuanTech progressing?” Leo asked, deliberately changing the subject to distract from the unfamiliar warmth spreading in his chest.

Selene didn’t find the question odd; it was just like her former mentor checking up on her homework. “I have some new data and results I was hoping you could help me analyze,” she responded eagerly.
