Juan's blue eyes seemed to penetrate her.

Debra squirmed, feeling naked in front of him.

"Whatever," she muttered, grabbing the pack and pulling out a cigarette.

She stuck it in her mouth, but when she tried to light it, Juan spoke up. "You gotta inhale when you light it."

She tried, but she couldn't even get the lighter right. Frustrated, she tossed the pack down.

"So what if I don't know how to smoke? Go tattle on me," she sulked, leaning back.

Juan was unfazed. "I'm not gonna do that."

"Aren't you?" She eyed him suspiciously.

"You act like a bad kid at school only because you're scared of getting hurt," he said.

"You're full of it." Her eyes flickered. "Who dares hurt me, the heiress to the Frazier family?"

"Well, you're living under someone else's roof," he said, laying it bare. "You don't go too hard in school because you're afraid they will come after you. But you can't look too dumb either, or you'll embarrass them. So, you pretend to be tough to keep people off your back."
