Juan's face darkened. "What kind of man do you take me for?"

"Some old creep who asks a girl to live with him on the first meeting," she muttered.

Juan fought to keep his composure. He couldn't believe that it was something a 17-year-old girl could say.

"Listen, you've got two choices," he said seriously. "Get in the car, or go back to Ralph's place and deal with their crap."

She hesitated, and he continued, "Rosalie has been nicer lately, right? That's because you're my fiancée. If I call off the engagement, the next few years will be rough for you. And trust me, if I ditch you, no guy in Seamar City will touch you."

Debra swallowed hard. "Fine."

She slid into the car. If he had led with that, she would have hopped in without a second thought.

In the car, they sat in silence.

Once arrived, she gaped at the size of the Nichols Mansion. The Frazier house was big, but this was next-level.

"You'll live here from now on," he said. "I'm rarely home, maybe just crashing after work. You won't have to worry about me bothering you."
