Chapter 273: "Say it again."

Belle swam to wakefulness. She was soaked in sweat and sore all over, but deep down inside, she somehow felt that the worst was over. The intense pain she had endured, and the effort it had taken to push out the life inside her, had thoroughly drained her energy.

Her body ached, her stomach cramped painfully, and worst of all, her breasts felt heavy and swollen in her chest, accompanied by the deep, throbbing soreness between her legs. When she shifted, it felt as though two heavy stones were lodged in her bodice, while a taut string was being pulled painfully between her legs, stretching up toward her lower abdomen and causing her immense discomfort.

Most of all...

She was so hungry and thirsty.

She turned her head to see her husband in the chair beside the bed, his head back, his eyes closed. He was in shirtsleeves and trousers, his shirt open to his navel. He held her hand firmly in his, but a gentle snore issued from his mouth. He rarely slept, and when he did, Belle knew it meant he was exhausted beyond control and needed a few hours of rest.

She recalled how he had helped deliver their son, who, she realized now, was no longer on the bed with her and was probably lying in the makeshift cradle nearby. She had never heard of a husband assisting his wife through labor. Even back in Aragonia, men usually avoided such situations entirely, staying away while the midwives did their work. But her own husband had done it, despite how shaken he had looked through it all.

She remembered his confession before she’d fallen asleep from sheer exhaustion, and her heart leapt unexpectedly in her chest, a heated, blooming sensation rising inside her.

’I love you.’

He had finally said the words she had been dying to hear from him for almost a year. Rohan loved her. Though there had never truly been any doubt that he did, not even without him saying it, hearing him say it aloud, not once but many times, made it all the more magical and unforgettable.

She must have done something really good in her past life to be rewarded with a man like this, a man who loved her more than anyone ever had, a man who stood by her in the worst of situations, who did not cringe away at the sight of her giving birth, and stood to see her till the end.

Belle squeezed his hand, ready to tease him for the rumpled sprawl of his big body on the chair. Oh, for the energy to climb out of bed and curl up in his lap, letting those strong arms hold her again.

"Hubby," she whispered softly.

At the small sound, he snapped open his eyes. The dark gaze raked over her, and then he was on the bed in a flash, a cup of water sloshing in his hand.

"Drink this."

"I’d love something to eat as well."

"There’s porridge I made for you last night, but you fell asleep and I couldn’t find it in myself to wake you. Take the water first."

Belle drank slowly, liking the wetness on her parched tongue and throat. Rohan stared at her mouth the entire time. She wondered whether, if she didn’t swallow fast enough for him, he’d hold her nose and dump the liquid down her throat to help her ease the thirst.

The moment she was done quenching her thirst, he had sped out of the room and in a few minutes he was back with a steaming bowl of porridge on a tray and a steaming cup of tea.

"Now food," Rohan said. He sat on the edge of the bed, held the bowl with one hand and used the other to scoop a spoonful and held it to her lips.

"You had a fever at dawn. You haven’t eaten anything since yesterday morning. You have to finish this," he told her in a strict voice.

Belle took it, unable to stop her smile. "What about Angel? How’s he doing? Don’t you think I should feed him as well..." she muttered, knowing the heaviness in her breasts was a natural indicator that her body was well prepared to nurse their son.

Rohan scooped more of the porridge as he watched her swallow before he answered.
