Chapter 256 – A Chance

–CAITLYN’S POV–

The sky was dipped in orange when I sat down on the edge of the garden wall.

Things had changed now.

Almost like something was different about the air itself.

I’d spent too many days holed up in the bedroom Blake put me in, refusing to leave even when he’d left the door open a hundred times to show me that I was allowed to step out.

I didn’t think there was any point, when I knew he wouldn’t let

me escape.

But today, I had left that room and ventured downstairs, stepping out into the gardens of his pack house.

Flowers bloomed all around, the fragrance hanging gently in the

air.

I stared up at the clouds, letting my mind float.

Everything with Lia had finally settled. I believed the things Blake had told me now.

That Zane had almost died. That The Order had nearly won that

battle. And then Lia—a literal goddess—had commanded them to obey.

And a lot more would have, if she’d let it stay like that. But she didn’t.

She reversed it. Saved them. Even though they hated her. Tried

Still, she’d reversed her command.

I’d heard it over the phone today. Bits and pieces of the recording. Zane had sent it to Blake when he requested him to.

If Blake had wanted, he could play the entire command to me, and maybe I’d forget about The Order.

But he didn’t. He’d edited the sound and played it to me in parts so I’d know what Lia said, but I wouldn’t forget The Order itself, or anything else that had happened.

If he wanted, he could even make Lia command me to like him. She’d probably listen to him. But he didn’t.

I also didn’t think Lia was evil anymore.

“Look who’s out of hiding,” Blake’s voice came from behind me.

I didn’t turn, just scooted over a little on the wall to make space. “Hey.”

He blinked. “You greeted me.”

“Shocking, I know.”

He sat beside me, elbows resting on his knees as he looked out at the sky with me. For a moment, there was just the wind, the chirp of evening birds, and the soft rustle of trees.

Then I spoke. “I had a perfect family once.”

Blake’s gaze shifted to me instantly. But he didn’t interrupt.

“I was ten. My sister, Hannah, was seventeen. We were watching TV one night when a wolf burst into the house. He turned human right in front of us—stark naked and wild—and just claimed her. Like she was some prize. Growling out ‘mine‘ and kissing her without her consent. He said she had to go with him. That she was to be his bride. The love of his life and what not. She didn’t wanna go with him, Blake. She was terrified. My parents tried to stop him, so he killed them. I watched it all, frozen, unable to move. I didn’t even try to help. And then he took her. Just like that.”

Blake’s fists clenched slowly, but still, he didn’t speak.

“I was put into a foster home then, and when I tried to tell them

what happened, no one believed me. They evaluated my sanity, thinking I was traumatised and imagining things. I screamed. I yelled. I told them all the truth. But no one believed it. So I went quiet. But I knew what I saw. And I knew that my sister still needed me. A couple of years ago, I ran away to live with an older friend. Eventually, I came across a closed group that claimed to hunt werewolves. It was The Order. The first ray of hope I found after years of darkness. I joined them thinking that maybe someday, I’d find her. That one day, when we would target a pack house and barge in, I would find her standing there with her hands raised. I would kill the piece of shit who took her, and I would bring her home.” I swallowed hard, as a couple of tears left my eyes, rolling down my cheeks.

I sniffed, wiping them away.

Blake stared at me with his gaze so gentle, it looked like he was about to start crying with me.

“She had screamed so loud when he stepped towards her,” I whispered, “covered in the blood of our parents. I made it my life’s mission to make him go through the same. And then take her to safety. Hold her close like she used to hold me when I was a child. But I didn’t find her, and then… you happened.”

Blake exhaled like he’d been punched. “I’m so sorry, Caitlyn,” he muttered, leaning closer. “No one deserves to go through that.”

“You did the same to Lia.”

He closed his eyes, shaking his head. “It was different for me, Caitlyn. I wasn’t in complete control of my actions because of my very odd situation. You and The Order knew I was unstable. That’s why you took advantage of it. I know, I’m a piece of shit, alright? I don’t deny it. But I would never kill someone she loved. Not her family. And the things I did do, I regret them with my whole heart. I would give up my life for her if I’m ever presented the chance. Just to make up for hurting her.”

I smiled. “If you say so.”

He sighed, but didn’t look away from me. “I looked into your past, you know. Tried to figure out who you were before all this. But I found nothing.”

“Because I changed my name,” I said, quietly. “My real name is Heather Williams.”

Blake sat up straighter, eyes wide. “Heather…”

“Yeah.”

“It’s beautiful,” he said softly.

I didn’t reply.

“Do you know anything about him? The wolf who took her?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Just that he had blue eyes. And he was big.
