“You invited him over?” Mom asked, rubbing the back of her neck.

“Yes.” I frowned. “Is that not okay?”

“No, no,” she replied. “It’s fine. Zane is always welcome here. It’s just that, ever since you’ve moved in with him, I’m getting greedy for your time.”

I smiled, taking her hands in mine. “I’m sorry, Mom. I know I’ve been really hung up in my own life. But I promise you, that’s gonna change now. I’ll try my best to visit you and call you as often as I can.”

She smiled, then nodded. “Okay. Take a seat now. Let me work.”

I sat down at the dining table, still trying to shake off the haze in my head.

Mom was moving around like she’d had three cups of coffee in the morning, pulling out pans and humming under her breath. It was relieving to see her like this. Healthy. Unhurt. Safe.

“You look pale,” she said, glancing at me over her shoulder. “You should eat something.”

“I’m fine,” I said automatically, but my voice didn’t sound convincing even to me.

“Fine isn’t good enough, Lia. You need to be doing great.”

I let out a chuckle, feeling the urge to hug her again.

But I didn’t want her to feel like something was wrong, so I

resisted.

The front door clicked open, and heavy footsteps entered the house. I was up from my chair before I even realised I’d moved.

“Dad!” I ran to him, throwing my arms around him. His jacket smelled like the supermarket.

“Woah,” he laughed, wrapping one arm around me while he clutched the grocery bag tighter with the other. “Hey, kiddo. What a pleasant surprise. Twice in a week?”

“Don’t guilt–trip me,” I muttered, scowling at him. “I love you guys.”

“We love you too. I’m just glad you’re home. How’s Zane?”

“He’s good.” I grinned. “He’s on his way here.”

“Oh, he’s coming too?”

“Mom is cooking so I thought, why not invite him?”

“Oh, of course. Your Mom has suddenly found her love for cooking. She’s been doing it for me every day this week. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier. Feels like old times again.”

I blinked, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes.

My parents had always loved each other.

“I’ll go change. You girls talk.” Dad went into their bedroom, closing the door.

I glanced at Mom, watching her. But before I could form another coherent thought, there was a sharp knock on the door.

“I’ll get it,” I said, answering it.
