–LIA’S POV–

I entered the kitchen to help Mom, and she gave me a smile. “Can you grab the sauce from the fridge?”

“Sure,” I replied, doing as she said. “Only one tonight?”

Mom frowned. “Yeah… was there supposed to be more?”

I chuckled, shaking my head. “No. I’m just glad you’ve realised that you do not need to go over the top for Zane.”

Mom blinked, then shrugged. “He is like a son. I enjoy spoiling him. But I didn’t know you guys were coming today.”

I scoffed. “I know, Mom.” I wrapped my arms around her from behind, resting my chin on her shoulder.

She froze for a second, then melted against me, making me frown. “Why are you jumpy today?” I asked. “Is it because Dad is being all romantic and making you awkward?”

Her cheeks flushed, and she smiled, her eyes dimming. “He’s not making me awkward. I love him.”

I pulled away from her, leaning on the counter beside her. “I know you do.”

I informed the Hounds of Lia’s safety, and then finally allowed myself to relax.

I loved Lia’s parents.

They made things feel normal.

But tonight, I couldn’t help but notice that something felt different.

There was an odd vibe to everything.

Lia’s dad was his usual, slightly strict self towards me, was smiling a little too much at her mom.

I didn’t recall Lia’s parents looking so in love before.

“Sure. I’ll come with.”

We walked into the kitchen together, and she opened the fridge to grab a bottle of cold water.

Lia glanced over her shoulder before speaking. “She’s being a bit… weird, isn’t she?” She looked at her parents, who were whispering and giggling about something like teenagers.

“But she’s here,” I whispered, wrapping an arm around Lia and pulling her closer.

“I know,” she replied, nodding. “It was probably nothing. Just something my mind made up.”

Finally, the movie ended, and we made our way to Lia’s bedroom to sleep.

“You’re quiet,” I said, closing the door.

“So are you.”

We stared at each other for a moment before she shrugged. “I’m just tired. Every time things start to settle down, something new comes up.”

I pulled her into my arms again, pressing my lips to hers.

The bond crackled between us, making it easier for a moment.

“Let’s just sleep,” Lia whispered once I pulled away. “I just wanna lie down in your arms.”
