Josefina got home just as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow that seemed at odds with the tense vibe in the living room.

Lena was buzzing around like a busy bee, pouring ice water for Garrett, slicing up an apple for Hattie, and even whipping up a chai latte, claiming it was for Josefina’s return.

“What’s Lena up to?” Josefina wondered, her brow furrowing in confusion. The Harrisons had always been good to her; Lena didn’t need to go overboard.

As Josefina stepped inside, Lena’s face lit up with a smile brighter than the Fourth of July. “Sis, you’re back! I made you a chai latte. Give it a try and let me know what you think.”

Josefina took the cup and sniffed the aromatic blend. “Smells great, but I’m on a diet, and it’s a bit late for a latte,” she said, declining gently.

A flicker of embarrassment crossed Lena’s face before she chirped again, “Alright then, I’ll make you another one tomorrow morning.”

“Sure,” Josefina shrugged. She’d be out the door at dawn; Lena could brew to her heart’s content.

Hattie, noticing Josefina’s return, chimed in, “Josie, you must be beat. Why don’t you head upstairs, take a nice hot shower, and get some rest?”

“And make sure to hit the sack early, Josie,” Garrett added. “You work too hard. You need your beauty sleep.”

Josefina was puzzled by their concern until her eyes landed on Lena, and the penny dropped. Were Hattie and Garrett trying to whisk her away for her own safety?

With a helpless chuckle, Josefina agreed, “Alright, I’ll turn in early. Dad, Mom, you should too. You both work so hard; you need a full eight hours.”

“I’m off to bed myself,” Garrett declared, stifling a yawn. “I’m beat.”

Hattie nodded, her eyes heavy. “Yes, we’re off to bed, Lena. Don’t stay up too late.”
