"They were beautiful." Sarah fell silent after that, staring blankly out the window until they reached Melvin's house.

In the continuing Bentley ride, Mia looked worriedly at her brother. "Is Sarah angry with me?"

Sarah had maintained an expressionless face and hadn't spoken to her.

Zachary patted her head reassuringly. "She's not angry with you. She just doesn't want to see me."

His eyes darkened as he pressed his lips together.

Mia could see her brother's disappointment. The situation was beyond her control now. She'd thought Sarah would forgive him after seeing the fireworks, but she'd been too naive.

Sarah must have been deeply hurt before to be so angry now. Mia nudged Zachary's arm, pouting. "Brother, you need to win her back!"

She could sense her brother's recent depression and Sarah's unhappiness. They clearly loved each other, yet here they were.

Back home, Sarah's mind was filled with thoughts of the fireworks and Zachary's words.

She couldn't be sure if everything Zachary said was true, but she couldn't dismiss it all as lies either.

She knew how cunning Vivian could be, managing to use Linda as a weapon while keeping her own hands clean.

Melvin arrived home at the same time, setting some fruit on the coffee table. "Just got back, Sarah?"

She snapped out of her reverie. "I don't want anything elaborate, Melvin. Too much has happened lately, and I don't want to hear people gossiping. Just a small gathering at home with close friends would be perfect."

Melvin thought about the recent online rumors and the malicious speculation Sarah had endured. He'd wanted to throw her a grand party to show everyone that Sarah was family, and no one could hurt her.

But she had a point. Why subject her to more unpleasant whispers? There was no need to let strangers ruin her birthday.

Noticing the worry in her eyes, Melvin pressed his lips together before speaking. "You've been unhappy lately. Let's do this your way - invite whoever you want."

Sarah's heart skipped a beat. Though Melvin hadn't said it directly, she knew he meant Zachary.

She shook her head with a bitter smile. "I'll invite those who should be there, Melvin. And leave out those who shouldn't."
