Sarah let out a cold laugh. “Why don’t you ask your daughter what she was up to last night? Did she have any witnesses?”

Lucy’s eyes flashed with panic. “What nonsense are you spouting? I… I was at home the night before last!”

Mrs. Chancer abruptly turned to her daughter, her face stiffening as if she’d suddenly recalled something.

“Of course Lucy was at home. I know that for a fact!”

Scarlett observed the subtle glances exchanged between the two, and the truth became clear.

“Scarlett, let me handle this.” Sarah’s voice was calm but firm as she pushed the blanket aside and got out of bed. She raised a hand to stop Scarlett, who had moved to support her.

Walking right up to Lucy, Sarah abruptly swung her hand.

“You just couldn’t resist pushing me into the river, could you?”

The crisp sound of the slap was almost drowned out by Sarah’s furious words. Lucy staggered back, clutching her cheek in disbelief.

“You… you hit me?!”

Scarlett turned sharply to Sarah. “Sarah, is what you said true? I’m calling the police right now!”

Lucy, finally understanding what Sarah had just revealed, hurriedly grabbed her arm. “Sarah! What are you saying? You jumped into the river because you were upset with my brother. How could you blame me for that?”

Mrs. Chancer joined in, her tone sharp. “Exactly! We came here out of concern, and this is how you repay us? You embarrassed yourself, and now you’re trying to drag Lucy down with you? How could you twist the truth like this as her sister-in-law?”

“I do hate you, but I didn’t do this! Stop making baseless accusations!” Lucy denied vehemently, glancing nervously at Mrs. Chancer.

“Sarah!” Mrs. Chancer snapped. “There’s no way Lucy would do such a thing. Maybe she was trying to save you and got scratched in the process!”

Seeing Sarah’s unmoved expression, Mrs. Chancer quickly turned to Scarlett. “Those two have always been at odds. You can’t just take Sarah’s word for it.”

Lucy seized the opportunity. “That’s right! I was trying to save you! I tried to grab you, but I couldn’t hold on. I ran to get help, but it took a long time to find anyone. By the time I got back, you’d already been rescued, so I brought Mom here immediately.”

Sarah sneered. “What a performance. If you really went to get help, then bring those people here now. Let’s see if you ever came back!”

“Enough. Let’s leave this to the police,” Scarlett said coldly.

“No!” Lucy suddenly burst into tears. “You can’t call the police!”
