Memories crashed over her like a violent storm, forcing her to relive moments she'd rather forget, playing out vividly before her eyes.
"Scarlett, don't go," Steven pleaded, his head pounding.
His friend turned to Scarlett. "Miss Larson, we'll leave him with you."
Before she could protest, they vanished into the night. Scarlett stared in disbelief. "Hey, you can't just..."
As she tried to leave, Steven wrapped his arm around hers. She tensed up and pushed him away. "What... what are you doing?"
"You take advantage of me and then try to run? Just walk away after getting what you wanted?" Steven gripped her arm tightly.
"Who took advantage of whom?" Scarlett wanted to shove him to the ground. If anyone was a victim here, it was her!
Steven clung to her arm, refusing to let go.
Scarlett glanced around anxiously - they were right outside her home. If her parents saw this, it would be a disaster.
"What do you want? Let me go!"
Scarlett twisted away from Steven's grasp and hurried through her front door.
Meanwhile, Zachary drove away from Melvin's house, dejected, still holding the chicken soup. He'd hoped to give it to Sarah, but she wouldn't even open the door, just told him to leave.
He'd thought things would improve between them after the Heritage House incident, but clearly, he was wrong.
Driving home in low spirits with the soup, he found Steven lying on the ground near his front door.
Frowning, he helped Steven up. "Steven, wake up."
Zachary took another sip. "What else could have hurt you this badly? I can't think of anything else."
"What about you? You seem down today. Still having troubles with Miss Sanders?” Steven slurred.
Zachary's lips tightened into a proud, faint smile. "I wouldn't call it trouble. She probably just never wants to see me again..."
His eyes dimmed, showing a rare glimpse of exhaustion.
They drank bottle after bottle. When the beer wasn't strong enough, Steven raided Zachary's wine cabinet for a bottle of red. He poured the dark ruby liquid into a crystal glass, its rich aroma a mix of bitter and sweet.
Red wine was meant to be savored, but Steven just wanted to get drunk. He downed it in one go, not even tasting it as it burned down his throat. The harsh, dry taste made him cough violently.
After his second glass, he finally passed out on the sofa. The wine glass slipped from his hand onto the ground - fortunately landing on grass.
