She wiped her tears and tossed her phone aside. Now she could only rely on one person - James.

Before leaving home, she'd deliberately left something for James's mother to find. Perhaps she would see it soon.

At the Chancer house, Mrs. Chancer was having dinner. She hadn't seen Charlotte all day, though she'd caught several glimpses of James. "Where's Charlotte? Haven't seen her today."

James's expression darkened. "She went back to her parent’s house."

Mrs. Chancer gave James a long look. "You will protect Charlotte, won't you?"

Only after receiving his firm nod did she feel relieved.

Walking into the living room, she noticed a paper on the side table. Opening it, she discovered it was Charlotte's prenatal report.

Charlotte had used a private doctor, and the report included the baby's gender. Mrs. Chancer lost her composure after just one glance.

She immediately took the report to James, throwing it down in front of him.

"James! Have you been mistreating Charlotte?"

“No, of course not!"

Mrs. Chancer rushed on, "I don't care! Go bring Charlotte back immediately - she's carrying your son, my grandson!"

James frowned meaningfully, then slowly told his mother about what Sarah and Charlotte had said.

Mrs. Chancer froze at first, taking a full two minutes to process before responding urgently, "We must protect that child! At any cost!"

She had waited endlessly, first in the detention center and now in the hospital. She believed deep down that her mother would eventually come for her and take her away from this nightmare.

Seeing her daughter’s skinny frame, Lucy’s mother felt a pang in her chest, her nose stinging as her eyes turned red. “Lucy, I know you’ve suffered.”

“Mom, are you here to take me home?” Lucy asked, her eyes wide with desperate hope, her expression pitiful as she stared at her mother.

Avoiding Lucy’s gaze, Mrs. Chancer reached into her bag and pulled out Charlotte’s medical report. She handed it to Lucy. “Lucy, take a look at this first.”

“What’s this?” Lucy unfolded the paper and scanned it. Her eyes landed on the gender section, where she lingered. Her brow furrowed. “Mom, she’s pregnant with a boy?”

Her mother nodded, relief flickering in her expression. “When James was with Sarah, there wasn’t even a whisper of news. And now? It’s a boy.”

Then her mother’s gaze turned complicated, a mixture of emotions flashing in her eyes as she looked at Lucy. That expression sent a chill down Lucy’s spine.

“Mom, why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, fear creeping into her voice.
