Mrs. Chancer took Lucy’s hand tightly. “Lucy, I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice trembling.

“Mom, what are you talking about?” A bad feeling washed over Lucy.

Sure enough, her mother choked up as she continued, “Lucy, it’s me and your brother who have wronged you. We need you to take responsibility for the Luther villa incident.”

Lucy stared at her mother in shock, disbelief plastered across her face. “Mom, what are you saying? You know about the villa incident? Then you must also know it wasn’t me! It was Charlotte! She framed me!” Her voice rose as her eyes widened.

Mrs. Chancer’s eyes were bloodshot, and her lips quivered. “Lucy, you have to think of the family…”

“Think of the family? So you’re planning to sacrifice me for it? This is because of Sarah, isn’t it? She’s close to finding evidence, so to protect Charlotte, you’re willing to throw me under the bus?” Lucy’s voice cracked as tears streamed down her face.

It hit her how absurd she had been, clinging to the belief that her mother loved her the most and would do everything to get her out. Yet, after days of pleading and hoping, this was the outcome?

Mrs. Chancer straightened her back, her initial pain for her daughter replaced by steely determination. She thought of the child Charlotte was carrying, and her resolve hardened. “Lucy, this isn’t up to you. The only thing you can do now is admit that you caused the villa incident.”

“Why should I? I didn’t do it! Why should I take the blame? Mom, you’ve let me down. Just because of the child she’s carrying, you’re ready to give up on your own daughter!” Lucy’s eyes burned with despair and anger.

At that moment, she wished her mother had never come. Hearing such cruel words was worse than being left to fend for herself.

“Lucy, don’t be stubborn. You’re part of this family. For years, I’ve spoiled and protected you, no matter what trouble you caused. But now it’s your turn to contribute to the Chancers,” Mrs. Chancer said coldly, rising from her seat and towering over Lucy.

That soft, cozy bed held so many of her childhood memories. Countless nights were spent curled up with her mother, begging for bedtime stories.

“Mom, I want to hear this one!”

“Alright, let’s have your dad play the frog.”

“Little frog, I’m here to keep you company.”
