"Charlotte's been arrested, and you're still here trying to convince me to take the blame?" Lucy said angrily.
Mrs. Chancer’s face showed embarrassment at being exposed, but she remained firm. "Lucy, given how things have turned out, you need to be more understanding."
"If Charlotte wasn't pregnant right now, I would protect you no matter what - you are my biological daughter after all. But the situation is different. She's carrying the Chancer family's only heir, and I must protect that child at all costs. Don't worry, even if you take the blame for her, your brother and I will do everything in our power to get you out."
Lucy laughed bitterly. "Mom, you already said all this the last time you visited. Have you forgotten what happened then?"
She found it ironic that since her detention and imprisonment, her mother had only visited twice - first to convince her to take the blame, which led to her suicide attempt, and now again with the same request.
It had only been days since her suicide attempt, and barely out of the hospital, here was her mother again.
She didn't want to hear any more of these twisted words. She stood up to leave. "If you're only here about Charlotte, maybe you shouldn't come at all."
Back home, Mrs. Chancer was sighing about asking James about any progress when he confronted her first.
"Mom, you went to see my sister again? Still trying to make her take the blame? Every piece of evidence the police have points to Charlotte. Yet you're still trying to pin this on Lucy? You nearly cost her life last time, and here you are pressuring her again. I miss the mother who used to dote on Lucy, not this person who only cares about Charlotte's baby."
"Fine! You all say it's my fault. Would I be doing this if it wasn't for your child?" Mrs. Chancer snapped, at her breaking point after the past few days' ordeals.
James sat down, speaking awkwardly. "I know my request might sound foolish, but I have to ask. Sarah, could you please let Charlotte be released, just for now?"
"Hah, are you joking, James? How could I possibly let her go?"
"James, use your head for a moment. If Charlotte had been the victim and I was the perpetrator, would you be pleading for my release in front of her?" Sarah laughed coldly.
James stared intently at Sarah. "Sarah, this is different. She's pregnant with my child."
"Pregnant with your child? Then you should protect her better. But what does that have to do with me? She hurt me, and she needs to face the consequences," Sarah shouted angrily.
