After a pause, she asked dejectedly, "James, have you forgotten?"

"No," James replied stiffly.

At this point, he couldn't keep pretending anymore.

Maybe it was because their feelings had worn thin over time, or perhaps because of that other person who kept appearing in his thoughts and dreams.

Charlotte didn't press further. Since James rarely visited, she wanted to make the most of their time together.

She slowly moved closer to James, her cheeks turning apple-red as she wrapped her arms around his neck. "James, can you kiss me?"

Looking at her shy eyes and flushed cheeks, James suddenly remembered his first kiss with Sarah.

The wedding venue had been elegant yet understated. He'd gone through the motions with the officiant throughout the ceremony. Then the crowd started chanting for him to kiss the bride.

But Charlotte didn't answer his question. She just looked at him with concern. "James, what's really going on? You seem distracted. Did something happen?"

James shook his head and said reassuringly, "It's nothing, don't worry. Right now, you just need to focus on taking care of yourself. You're pregnant - don't overthink things. I'll handle everything."

Charlotte's heart warmed, and she gazed at James with affection, thinking he'd been worried about her all along.

"Get some rest. I need to go now," James said, standing up to leave.

He couldn't sit there calmly talking with Charlotte anymore, especially not with Sarah filling his thoughts.
