James rubbed his temples. "Charlotte, there are things I need to handle at work. I'll come back another day."

Charlotte's eyes turned red. "James, I miss you so much. When I wake up from nightmares at night and you're not there, I cry."

Her words were pitiful, and James felt moved. He knew Charlotte was having a tough pregnancy, with no one around when she had morning sickness.

He sat back down. "Charlotte, I'm sorry. I haven't been taking good care of you."

That afternoon, Sarah took Mia to school, leaving Sydney alone in the house.

While Annette was cleaning in the back garden, Sydney crept out of her room and stood at Mia's doorway. After checking that no one was around, she carefully took out a key and unlocked Sarah's door.

This room was probably the largest after the master bedroom.

She clenched her fists.

Why did Sarah get everything without having to work for it?

She silently searched Sarah's room and spotted a laptop on the bedside table. Just as she was about to open it, she noticed a manila envelope underneath.

She pulled it out curiously, and when she looked at its contents, her heart leaped - this was exactly what she'd been looking for.

She spread the documents across the bed and photographed each page with her phone. After putting everything back exactly as she'd found it, she left Sarah's room.

"Hello, Aunt Amanda? Are these what you wanted? I just sent them to you," she said excitedly, surprised at how easy it had been.

He walked near the counseling office but didn't go in. He just watched from a distance, unsure of what he was looking for.

At 7:30, the classroom lights went off, leaving only the counseling office lit. He saw Mia go in, but hadn't seen either of them come out yet.

He sat there for two full hours, silent, staring at the counseling office, imagining Sarah inside.

Finally, the office lights went out and the glass door opened.

Mia came out first, with Sarah locking up behind her.

They walked to the gate, chatting and laughing. He knew Mia and Sarah had always gotten along well.

James watched them from afar without interrupting. In that moment, he thought maybe just watching like this wasn't so bad.
