Manager Sullivan’s face lit up with excitement, but he had to ask, "Did you see her body?"
"Manager, last night I made sure to poke more holes in that already leaky roof. Just as expected, the house collapsed during the night. The thunder was so loud nobody heard a thing. By now, she's definitely buried under the rubble. Enough time has passed - she's already dead," Charlie said confidently.
Still looking concerned, Manager Sullivan asked, "Did Mr. Lambert know it too?”
"Mr. Lambert? He doesn't know anything yet. But by the time he finds out, it'll be too late," Charlie replied with a smirk.
Manager Sullivan patted his shoulder, then pointed at the injuries on his face. "What happened there?"
Charlie was forthcoming. In fact, he hoped Manager Sullivan might help him.
"Manager, I went to the gambling den a few days ago and lost some money. My wife wouldn't give me more - she hid it so well I couldn't find it. So I went back yesterday, and before I could even reach the table, I..." He trailed off, looking defeated.
Understanding immediately, Manager Sullivan chuckled and took a paper bag from his desk drawer, handing it to Charlie. "You did good work yesterday. Consider this a bonus."
Charlie looked at the bag with satisfaction. As soon as he left the manager's office, he eagerly opened it. Inside was five thousand dollars!
He quickly stuffed the money into his pocket, making sure to hide it securely.
Manager Sullivan continued discussing other matters, but Mr. Lambert didn't hear a word. His mind was consumed with doubt. After all, Sarah was Mr. Sanders' only sister.
"May I go check?" he asked, still unable to believe it.
Manager Sullivan gave him a sharp look. "Are you questioning me? Why would I lie about this? Besides, the factory is in a delicate situation. As one of our senior staff, you should be leading the new workers in repairing the machines."
"Since Miss Sanders has passed away, headquarters probably won't send anyone else for a while."
Just as Manager Sullivan was speaking passionately, a figure walked through the factory's main entrance. She looked expressionless as she locked eyes with him. To everyone's shock, she pushed Manager Sullivan aside.
