Back at the Wesley place, Charlie shut the front door with a meaningful smirk as his parents had already gone to bed. He cleared the dining table and retreated to his room. Alone, his thoughts turned to what he imagined would happen between Zachary and Sarah, and he couldn't help but snicker to himself. This time, he felt he had finally done Zachary a favor by orchestrating the situation. After this, he was sure Zachary would owe him one, especially in his gambling endeavors.

Once something happened between Sarah and Zachary, Charlie thought he would have significant leverage over Sarah—she wouldn't dare cross him, not even in front of the factory manager. Yet, the thought of their imminent encounter left him feeling an unexplained emptiness, especially since the woman he usually pushed around had defiantly returned to her mother's house after yesterday's beating. How dare she act differently when every other woman in the town bore their circumstances silently?

Why was it acceptable for every other man to strike their wives, but not him, especially when he was one of the few who had managed to earn good money at the factory?

But something felt off. Despite drinking only a little at dinner, he felt unusually hot. He began shedding his clothes, thinking it might just be the alcohol affecting him. However, the heat intensified with each layer he removed until he was completely undressed, and that's when it dawned on him—something was seriously wrong.

He had never used that drug he bought since he wasn't sure of its effects, but this overwhelming heat felt like what he imagined the drug would do. He remembered placing the drug in Sarah's glass and watching her drink it.

Could it be?

The realization struck him when he recalled Sarah's words about not keeping his parents from joining them for dinner, which was when she must have switched their glasses.

"That cunning woman!" He cursed under his breath as the unbearable heat drove him nearly to madness. With Sarah taken away by Zachary and his wife gone back to her family, he had nowhere to release this sudden overwhelming desire.

After finally feeling satiated, Charlie leaned back against the headboard, a woman resting against his chest as he lit a cigarette.

"That feels incredible," he sighed contentedly, his mind racing with excitement.

"You finally remembered me today," the woman's soft voice stirred him further.
