Julian and his wife finally looked satisfied.

They both knew full well how obedient Anastasia usually was to Nora’s every word.

If Nora spoke, then no matter how unwilling Anastasia might be, she’d have no choice but to apologize and hand over the money.

Donna Lockwood gave a little huff and, turning to Anastasia, demanded as if it were only natural, “Just wire the one hundred thousand to my account, will you?”

Anastasia didn’t budge. Her phone chimed, and she calmly picked it up to check her messages, ignoring everyone else.

Penelope Sterling pressed her, “Anastasia? Hurry up and transfer the money to your aunt. And apologize to Delia, now!”

Anastasia let out a short, incredulous laugh as she set her phone down, her striking features tinged with disbelief. “And when, exactly, did I agree to pay anyone or apologize?”

“Anastasia.” Nora shot her a helpless look. “Don’t be difficult. Own up, apologize nicely, and compensate your aunt. If you do, they’ll be gracious enough not to hold this against you.”

Anastasia almost burst out laughing. So, not only was she supposed to apologize for something she didn’t do and hand over money without question, but she was also supposed to be grateful they wouldn’t make a big deal out of it? From the way Nora was talking, anyone would think Anastasia was the one who’d actually done something wrong!

She shot Nora a mocking look.

Nora’s heart skipped a beat under that gaze. “Anastasia—”

“No wonder you’re my stepmother,” Anastasia said coolly.

“…What?” Nora’s smile froze.

“I said you’re my stepmother.” Anastasia crossed her legs and looked her straight in the eye.

“If you were my real mother, you’d at least ask what happened, or wonder if I was the one being wronged. You wouldn’t just take someone else’s word for it and decide I’m the one at fault—demanding apologies and money from me.”

“Wouldn’t you agree, Mrs. Sinclair?”
