“Anastasia!” she called out hurriedly, cutting Anastasia off mid-sentence.
“Oh, Mrs. Sinclair, decided to join us at last?”
Anastasia’s smile was cold as ice. She crossed her legs, reclining in her chair, her gaze fixed on the flustered woman hurrying closer.
Penelope had tagged along as well, her voice brimming with indignation. “Anastasia! My mother’s always treated you well—how could you say such things about her?”
Anastasia rolled her eyes with absolutely no attempt to hide her contempt. “I didn’t realize shamelessness could reach such heights. Today’s really been an education.”
Someone in the room stifled a laugh.
Anastasia lifted her chin, eyes gleaming with challenge. “Tell me, which part of what I said isn’t true? Was it a lie when I said you tried to ruin me, to raise me to be useless? Was it a lie that you stole the shares my mother left me?”
Penelope’s face turned crimson. “No one tried to ruin you! My mother has always been good to you! And those shares—there’s more to it than that—”
“I don’t care about the excuses. I care about the results,” Anastasia cut her off, her tone sharp and unyielding. “Just answer me this: did things turn out the way I said, or not?”
A mocking smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. “You call that being good to me? Hilarious! You’re her real daughter. Funny how she never tried to sabotage you, never dressed you up like some circus act so you’d make a fool of yourself in public, huh?”
Penelope was speechless.
All around them, people began shooting Nora subtle, complicated looks.
They’d always heard stories about how difficult Anastasia was. But now, it seemed things weren’t so black and white after all.
