Penelope’s expression changed in an instant.

The moment she spotted Anastasia—especially with Louis at her side—everything clicked into place. Today’s events weren’t just a string of coincidences. Anastasia had orchestrated all of it. Even if Penelope was just a stepdaughter, what ordinary waiter would have the gall to act like this? Unless, of course, Anastasia had given the order.

She clenched her teeth so hard she thought she might crack a molar.

Anastasia’s arrival brought another wave of silence over the room. Their classmates stared at her, as if seeing her for the very first time. They were used to the Anastasia with wild hair and a prickly attitude—but this Anastasia, poised and striking, was a revelation.

She didn’t need to say a word. One look at her, and it was obvious she came from privilege—a natural air of authority surrounded her. Even a casual glance from her was enough to make people shrink back, uneasy.

“Penelope, go on—tell us, what exactly did he say that’s so out of line?” Anastasia folded her arms, her smile sweet but her eyes icy. “If you tell me, I’ll deal with him immediately. After all, as the owner of the hotel, I do have that authority.”

She made a point of emphasizing her position, and the air in the room grew even tenser. The classmates who’d mocked her earlier for supposedly not being able to afford the meal now blushed furiously, unable to meet her gaze. Who could have imagined? They’d been enjoying Anastasia’s hospitality all along while targeting her behind her back.

Penelope’s face shifted from red to pale and back again. She took a shaky breath and forced a brittle smile.

“It’s nothing, really. I just wanted to have dinner here with some friends, but this waiter—who knows who put him up to it—insulted me out of nowhere!” she protested. “Sure, I’m just the Sterling family’s stepdaughter, but my father treats me like his own. Since when does a mere waiter get to insult me?”

Her words dripped with implication: so what if she was a stepdaughter? With Gabriel’s support, her status was no less than Anastasia’s.

“That’s not fair, Miss!” the waiter said, looking wounded as he turned to Anastasia. “Ms. Sterling walked right in and claimed she was the Sterling family’s daughter, demanding access to the Golden Oasis—the private suite only you can use! Of course I couldn’t let her in. How is that an insult?”

“And when I recognized her and mentioned she’s actually Mr. Sterling’s stepdaughter, she got upset! But I was only stating the truth—she’s not his real daughter, no matter what last name she uses. That’s just a fact. How is that an insult?”
