“What?!”
Harrison sprang to his feet, his face darkening with anger.
He hadn’t paid much attention when Anastasia suddenly ran off. His sweet little wife was always so well-behaved—maybe she just needed a moment alone to sulk. The last thing he expected was for her to actually leave home.
…
Anastasia didn’t take anything with her—just her phone—as she slipped out of Rosewood Manor. She wiped away her tears, swallowed her pride, and flagged down a cab straight to her college dorm.
She’d moved into an apartment recently, but never officially gave up her dorm room. Some of her things were still there—she’d been too lazy to pack them up, thinking she’d leave them just in case. Who could have guessed she’d actually need that backup plan now?
As soon as she stepped into the dorm building, she nearly ran right into Maggie and Sandra.
Maggie’s eyes widened in surprise. “Anastasia? What are you doing here? Didn’t you take a leave of absence?”
She took in Anastasia’s pale face and awkward gait, rushing over to steady her. “Are you sick? Come on, let’s get you to the nurse’s office!”
“No,” Anastasia said quickly, grabbing Maggie’s hand to stop her.
“Are you sure?” Sandra frowned, her concern obvious. “You don’t look so good.”
“I’m fine, really,” Anastasia managed a shaky smile.
Go to the nurse’s office? And let them find out why she looked like this? She’d rather die of embarrassment.
Thinking of how cold Harrison had been these past three days—how he’d ignored her pleas and refused to let her step outside their room—Anastasia felt her eyes sting again. She’d never felt so humiliated.
“It’s nothing serious,” she mumbled. “I just need to lie down for a bit.”
Despite her insistence, Maggie and Sandra weren’t convinced. They walked her back to her dorm room themselves.
The room was empty. After her falling out with Helen, Anastasia couldn’t stand the thought of Helen still living there, even if she herself had moved out. So she’d told Helen to leave. Now, she had the place to herself.
Maggie fussed over her, helping her get into bed. “We’ll stay with you for a while, okay?”
Just in case something happened.
