“No,” Harrison said flatly, his irritation barely hidden.
He didn’t know who was trying to see him this time, and honestly, he didn’t care. Ever since he arrived in Fairhaven, he’d made it clear: Rosewood Manor wasn’t open to visitors.
What annoyed him most was being interrupted over something so trivial, especially when he was enjoying a rare quiet moment with Anastasia.
The housekeeper gave a quick nod and hurried off to relay his message to the gatehouse.
Anastasia watched the housekeeper leave, curiosity flickering in her eyes. She remembered the car she’d glimpsed at the gates earlier—something about it seemed familiar. “Who’s outside?” she asked.
“No idea. Doesn’t matter,” Harrison replied, taking her hand and leading her upstairs. “Don’t you have class this afternoon?”
She blinked, pulled from her thoughts, and nodded.
“I have a few things to take care of. I’ll drive you back to your apartment later,” Harrison said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
“Okay,” Anastasia answered sweetly. As soon as Harrison disappeared into his study, she slipped upstairs to find Marcus and quietly gave him his acupuncture treatment.
Marcus lived for her visits now. Every time Anastasia treated him, he was so tense he barely dared to blink.
When she finished and packed away her things, Marcus finally asked, “Anastasia, how much longer until I can walk again?”
“Not much longer,” she assured him. “You won’t have to wait too much.”
That answer sent a rush of hope through him. For the first time in a long while, he was excited about the future.
Anastasia went back downstairs, and soon Harrison emerged from his study. The two of them got into the car to head back to her apartment.
At the gates of Rosewood Manor, Shirley was still standing, stubborn as ever.
She’d asked Aaron to call ahead for her, and after a while, he called back: he’d tried, but Uncle Harrison was busy and told her to go home for now.
But Shirley wasn’t about to just give up. She dropped Mr. West’s name, and at last, the gatekeeper agreed to pass along a message. She figured that if she’d already brought up her grandfather, she’d definitely be let in soon. But even then, she was turned away.
Humiliated, she stood there, ready to admit defeat and leave.
Just then, a car pulled out from the Manor. In the backseat, she caught a glimpse of two figures. The man nearest her was stiff and unmistakable—Mr. Harrison Lancaster.
