Across the room, Shirley’s anger flared uncontrollably. Just venting wasn’t enough—she grabbed Penelope by the hair and slammed her head down hard against the table.

Silverware and dishes crashed to the floor, the clatter echoing through the stunned silence.

Penelope shrieked in pain, clutching her head. Disheveled and humiliated, she stammered, “I don’t know! I swear, I didn’t know Anastasia married Mr. Harrison Lancaster… I’ve never even set foot in Rosewood Manor!”

“It was Anastasia who kept it from me—Shirley, you have to believe me! I never meant to deceive you!”

Shirley’s face was stone cold as she stared her down. “Is that so? Then tell me, all those things you told me about Anastasia and Aaron—how much of it was true, and how much was just lies?”

Penelope’s palms broke into a cold sweat. There was no way she could admit she’d lied—she’d be handing Shirley proof that she’d used her.

Pale as a ghost, she insisted, “I swear, I never lied to you! The whole thing with Anastasia and Mr. Lancaster isn’t even a secret—everyone here knows about it! If you don’t believe me, ask them!”

Shirley turned to look at the women standing nearby.

They exchanged awkward glances, suddenly at a loss for words.

Sure, most of them knew something about Anastasia and Aaron, but now Anastasia was Mr. Harrison Lancaster’s woman. Who would dare say a word?

Shirley’s heart sank at their response.

Her face darkened. She shot Penelope a vicious glare, warning, “You’d better not be lying to me.”

With that, she let go of Penelope’s hair and stormed out.

Right now, it didn’t matter who had manipulated her—what mattered was that she’d managed to offend Harrison Lancaster himself.
