Penelope’s face changed in an instant.

What on earth was Aaron doing here? And at this exact moment, no less!

Aaron, too, had spotted Penelope, along with Shirley and Anastasia. A sinking feeling crept into his chest—something was definitely off.

He stopped in his tracks and turned to Logan, the man who’d brought him. “Logan, didn’t you say Mr. Harrison Lancaster wanted to see me?”

Half an hour earlier, Logan had found him and said that Harrison wanted a word. When the car pulled up at Kingsbridge University, Aaron had felt a twinge of suspicion, but brushed it aside. After all, he’d seen Harrison personally drop Anastasia at the school just recently. It made sense he’d be around.

But now, instead of Harrison, Aaron was standing face-to-face with the three people who absolutely should not be together.

His stomach twisted as he thought about the tangled web between them all.

“It’s Mrs. Lancaster who wants to see you,” Logan said calmly. “She and Mr. Lancaster are of one mind. Her wishes are his wishes. So tell me, what’s the difference between her wanting to see you and Mr. Lancaster wanting to see you?”

As he spoke, Logan led him closer.

“My lady.” Logan bowed his head respectfully to Anastasia.

Anastasia nodded and fixed her gaze on Aaron.

“Aaron, what’s the meaning of this? Why did you trick me into coming here?” Aaron asked, his voice tight.

Anastasia lifted her eyes. “Shirley told me that you said there’s something going on between us. That we even slept together. Is that true?”

Aaron’s head snapped toward Shirley, then, more subtly, to Penelope.

Penelope bit her lip, her voice trembling with grievance. “Mr. Lancaster, Anastasia keeps insisting I have some secret affair with you. Yes, we’ve talked before, but never anything inappropriate! I don’t deserve this kind of reputation. Please, clear my name!”
