Anastasia stepped out of the school gates and immediately spotted Harrison’s car waiting for her at the curb.

Waving goodbye to Juliet and the others, she broke into a light jog, her steps bright and buoyant.

“Sweetheart!” she called out, the moment she slid into the passenger seat. She flung herself into Harrison’s arms, her smile radiant and infectious.

Harrison wrapped an arm around her waist, drawing her close. He glanced down at her, his eyes warm. “What happened today? You look so happy.”

Basking in the deep, velvety timbre of his voice, Anastasia blinked up at him, feigning innocence. “Nothing at all! I’m just happy because I get to see you.”

He chuckled quietly, brushing his fingers over her earlobe, but let the matter drop.

A couple of days later, word spread through town: Shirley had stormed into the Lancaster estate, given Aaron a well-deserved thrashing, and then—fuming with righteous anger—called off their engagement before heading back to Riverton.

Now, chaos reigned at the Lancaster home. The engagement had been a sham from the start, and with the truth out, all the benefits they’d gained would have to be returned—and worse, they’d now have to face the wrath of the West family.

“This is the end, the absolute end!” Aaron’s mother, Debby Zade Lancaster, collapsed onto the floor, her face drained of hope.

Aaron’s father, Barry Lancaster, looked thunderous. Without warning, he slapped Aaron hard across the face. “Useless! What did I tell you? I told you to keep Ms. West happy and under control. Is this how you do it?”

“I warned you—stay away from that Sterling girl, she’s nothing but trouble. We can’t risk the Wests finding out, and you were supposed to steer clear of Anastasia, too. She’s got Mr. Harrison Lancaster behind her! Did everything I said just go in one ear and out the other?!”

Barry’s anger was volcanic, and Aaron’s head snapped to the side from the blow.

Aaron himself was a mess. His eyes were bloodshot, and he’d been stumbling through the last couple of days in a fog. After that ugly scene at school, he’d rushed to get retested at the clinic—only to discover he didn’t have HIV at all. Neither did Penelope.
