Juliet had barely walked away when Anastasia spoke up first. “Uncle Murray, you came to see me today, didn’t you? You still care about me, right? You’re still worried about me?”

Her eyes stung with tears as she looked up at Murray, her expression full of longing and hope.

Murray offered her a faint smile. “You’re not the same as you used to be. You’ve changed a lot.”

Anastasia smiled back, a sincerity mixed with guilt in her voice. “I know I was stubborn before. I made a lot of mistakes, Uncle Murray, I really did. Now—”

She hesitated. What she wanted to ask was whether he could finally acknowledge her as family again, but instead she changed her question, her tone pleading. “Now, can I visit Grandpa? I heard he’s unwell, and I’m really worried.”

Murray was surprised by how different she sounded—gone was the defiant girl he remembered.

But that was as far as his reaction went.

“Your grandfather’s doing just fine. There’s nothing for you to worry about,” he replied, his voice cool.

He cut her off. “I heard you went to the Brennans’ yesterday, hoping to visit. I appreciate the thought—it’s good you care. But there’s no need to go again.”

Anastasia’s nails dug sharply into her palm. “What do you mean, Uncle Murray?”

“I mean, the Brennans already have Lauren now. There’s no place for you there anymore. It’s best you stay away—Lauren doesn’t need to see you and get the wrong idea.”

“Lauren is an exceptional girl. The whole Brennan family is happy with her. I believe she’ll carry on your mother’s legacy—her skills, her reputation—and let the world know just how brilliant her mentor’s heir can be.”
