After they sat down, Aaron put on his best act, murmuring a few sugary lines that sounded downright rehearsed.

Anastasia listened, feeling her lunch threaten to make a reappearance. She forced herself to hold it together, but her patience was wearing thin. “So? Why did you want to see me?” she asked, her tone clipped.

Noticing she wasn’t as hostile as before, Aaron brightened, convinced he’d finally managed to win her over.

“Anastasia, I asked you here because I need a favor.”

She glanced up, bored. “What kind of favor?”

“I need you to get something from Uncle Harrison for me. It’s important,” he said, leaning in.

“My Anastasia’s always been clever—she knows how to get on Uncle Harrison’s good side,” he added, his voice full of fake praise. “I know you don’t like him, but you put up with him and pretend to be sweet—all for me, right? Don’t worry, I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me.”

“You go in and out of Harrison’s study all the time now, don’t you? It shouldn’t be hard to swipe a file for me. It’s not much to ask, right?”

As soon as he finished speaking, the room was plunged into silence.

Next door, it felt as if someone had dropped a ball of dry ice into the air—the chill seeped straight into your bones.

Harrison lounged back in his chair, his long, powerful arm draped casually over the armrest. His eyes were half closed, masking whatever emotion might be lurking there, but the cold, dangerous aura emanating from him was enough to make Logan hold his breath.

In the suffocating silence, Anastasia finally spoke.

“You want me to steal a file for you?”

“Yes, Anastasia! Only you can help me.” Aaron’s voice grew urgent. “I won’t lie—someone wants to take down Uncle Harrison, and that file is crucial to the plan. With it, we can finally put him out of commission for good!”
