“Uh... Darling?” Anastasia’s eyes widened a little, surprise flickering across her face.

Harrison towered over her. From her vantage point, she could only see the strong line of his jaw; only when she tilted her head back could she take in his striking, sharp-edged features.

“Didn’t you want me to stand up? Why so shocked now?” His deep, velvety voice resonated above her, almost like a cello.

Without thinking, Anastasia threw her arms around his trim waist, her eyes sparkling with admiration. “You look amazing, darling!”

He hadn’t exactly looked bad sitting down, but now that he was on his feet, there was something entirely different about him—an undeniable presence, magnetic and commanding. It was impossible not to be captivated.

Harrison’s expression didn’t change, but there was a new warmth in the air around him. He took her hand and led her toward the stairs.

“But you haven’t touched the soup I made for you!” Anastasia protested, glancing back.

“Medicine first,” he said firmly, leaving no room for argument.

As Harrison escorted Anastasia downstairs, the staff—who’d been speaking quietly with Logan—fell silent, startled.

“Mr. Lancaster!” They all stood at once, respectful and a little taken aback. Several couldn’t help sneaking glances at Anastasia, their eyes full of surprise.

As Harrison’s most trusted staff, they knew better than anyone the extent of his health issues. They’d assumed no one could persuade him, least of all the new Mrs. Lancaster. Yet, here she was—and she’d actually succeeded.

Thomas was among them, still reeling from what Logan had just told him: that Harrison had allowed Anastasia to see him. Thomas had scoffed at the idea, insisting that Anastasia, a newcomer to Rosewood Manor, could never get through to Mr. Lancaster. He’d even suggested fetching Alice instead...

Reality, however, had made a fool of him.

Anastasia had not only succeeded—she was coming down the stairs hand-in-hand with Mr. Lancaster himself.

Everyone knew Harrison despised being touched, especially by women. Yet, for Anastasia, he made an exception.

Descending the grand staircase together, he broad-shouldered and long-legged, she petite and lively—they looked unexpectedly perfect.
