Early the next morning.

Hansen got bundled into the car by his son and daughter-in-law and whisked off to the hospital.

It was time for his annual senior checkup, and Andre stuck by his dad’s side the whole way.

Henry had his own appointment too—unfortunately, that meant a blood test.

As if fate was having a laugh, Hansen needed his blood drawn as well.

So there they were: grandpa and grandson, sitting shoulder to shoulder at the lab counter. “Henry first,” the nurse said.

Henry watched, eyes huge, as a needle pricked another kid’s arm. He immediately shrank back, clutching his own arm, looking like he was ready to bolt. “No, no, no~”

Andre scooped him up quickly. “Come on, let’s show Grandpa how brave you are. My boy’s the toughest, right?”

But Henry shook his head like a drum. He was ready to make a break for it.

Since the little one was impossible, Andre tried his luck with the big one. “Dad, how about you go first? Show Henry how it’s done.”

Hansen pointed at himself, incredulous. “Me? Your old man? You want me to set an example for your son? That little rascal?” He pointed dramatically at Henry.

Andre nodded, keeping a firm but gentle hand on his dad’s shoulder. “Sit, Dad. Get it over with, then we can go stuff ourselves with breakfast.”

With a sigh, Hansen settled in. Henry, clinging to his mom, finally stopped squirming.

Determined to set a good example, Hansen watched the needle go in, his blood slowly filling the tubes. He even managed a grin for Henry. “See, Henry? Doesn’t hurt a bit. Easy as pie. Grandpa’s fine.”

Mia had to look away, wincing.

Andre kept coaxing Henry. “Ask Grandpa if it hurts, buddy.”

Henry sniffled, almost in a whisper: “Does it hurt, Grandpa~?”

The nurse tried to calm him, but Henry tried to yank his arm away. Andre kept a gentle but firm hold.

He cried and cried, his sobs echoing through the hallway, until finally it was over. Andre pressed a cotton ball to Henry’s arm, uncovered Mia’s eyes, and carefully took his son into his arms. “All done. No more needles.”

Henry, still sniffling and wet-faced, reached out for his mom. “Mama, hold me~”

Mia’s heart nearly broke. She scooped him up, hugged him tight, and soothed him as she walked him out to the hallway.

Andre stayed to get the results, while Hansen followed out, clearly worried, and tried to cheer up his grandson.

After the shot, Henry quieted down a lot.

He stayed curled up in his mom’s arms for half an hour before finally switching to his dad’s lap.

Grandpa and grandson’s checkups were finally over. Hansen had a couple of the usual old-age issues—just had to watch his diet and keep moving. Henry was a little low on some vitamins, so the doctor gave him a syrup to take at home. Luckily, it wasn’t bitter—Mia tasted it first just to be sure, then handed it to Henry to drink by himself.
