Chad had been holed up in his office for over an hour before finally seeing his visitors out. As he walked them to the door, he said, “We all have our own jobs to do. I’ll have to trouble you to look into this complaint as quickly as you can.”
“We will. For now, Officer Chad, keep an eye on Donnie, will you?”
Chad nodded.
Once their car was out of sight, he headed back inside the station. It didn’t take long for people to gather around, curious. “Officer Chad, what did they want?”
Catching his trainee’s eye, Chad just said, “Nothing important.”
Back in his office, he leaned into his chair, thinking back to the times his trainee had asked—half-joking—if he had a secret stash, or teased colleagues about hiding money from their wives. The kid had never seemed hard up for cash, so Chad hadn’t thought much of it at the time.
He hadn’t expected Stephania to want to study abroad, or to need that much money.
During the afternoon meeting, Chad noticed his usually upbeat trainee looking surprisingly down—definitely not his usual self.
Still, Chad trusted him. He didn’t believe Donnie would do anything reckless.
That night, Chad came home.
Wayne was at his grandpa’s place with his uncle and older cousin. He was in much better spirits—even had a teary video call with his mom, but was otherwise his old self.
Meanwhile, Henry had snagged the front seat next to his cousin, both boys buckled up tight. Mia was in the back, shouting, “Henry! Wheels are for the road, not for tearing up the grass! There’s a whole driveway—why are you steering straight for the lawn?”
Andre had just come in, and when he saw his son joyriding through the yard, he called out, “Get over here!”
Chad wandered over, laughing. “Andre, Henry’s still a little troublemaker, huh?”
Andre shot his son a look. “Hang on, Chad. Let me go wrangle him.”
He jogged onto the lawn, caught up with Henry, gave him a quick scolding, and finally got the toy car back on track.
Hansen Cedillo was standing at the door, shaking his head. “What is it with these kids? Just like Mia—never drive on the actual road.”
After a good long play, the two dads each scooped up their boys and headed inside.
