Kendrick called his son. If his protégé had caught wind of something fishy, Chad would definitely start investigating too.

The investigation dragged on for days. Whenever Chad got home late, Wayne would sleep in his grandfather’s room.

Sometimes, his aunt would rock Wayne to sleep and then carry him into his brother’s room. Wayne’s brother, on the other hand, was always lulled to sleep by their uncle—a nightly struggle that rarely went smoothly.

Molly and Coleen Byrne had been busy themselves. Molly had meetings with the old-timers at work, and she’d video call her mom to talk through her ideas and decisions.

“Mom, what time does Chad usually get home these days?” Molly asked, trying to sound casual but clearly fishing for info.

Coleen replied, “Not sure. Wayne’s been staying over at the Cedillo’s, and Chad goes straight there after work. Why? Is something wrong?”

Molly grinned, “Just keeping tabs on Chad~ What else?”

Chad had recently asked her to transfer a huge sum of money, and he wouldn’t explain why. Molly couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that something was up with her husband.

After hanging up with her mom, Molly called her dad.

Hansen had finally decided to get an early night. He turned off the lights, closed the curtains, and got cozy in bed. Just as he was about to fall asleep, his phone started buzzing.

His eyes shot open, sleep gone in an instant.

He clenched his fists and checked the screen. “Molly!”

He answered, and on the other end was Jade’s bedroom, lit up like a Christmas tree.
