Chapter 180
The ride back to the mansion was cloaked in silence.
The hum of the engine was the only sound between them, filling the space like a dull roar.

Alejandro’s hands gripped the wheel tight enough that the veins on his forearms stood out, his jaw clenched hard. Nivera sat beside him, still trying to calm the pounding of her heart.
Her arms folded protectively over her chest, but even that shield couldn’t stop the tremors running through her body.
Alejandro glanced at her from the corner of his eye more than once, but he said nothing until they finally arrived back at the mansion.
As the front doors shut behind them, Alejandro stopped in the foyer, turning toward her. “Tell me everything,” he said, his voice clipped, calm–but beneath it, the thunder of fury was barely contained.
Nivera exhaled shakily, hugging her arms around her torso. “It… it was the same as before. I thought I heard someone, but this time it wasn’t in my head. Martins saw them. He chased, but-” her throat worked as she forced the words out. “They got away.”
Alejandro’s jaw ticked. His hand flexed at his side like he was resisting the urge to punch something. That was because he was. He wanted to punch that bastard’s face.
Martins was going to get an earful from him for not catching the bastard.
For a long beat, Alejandro said nothing, but then he looked at her, and the edge in his eyes softened just slightly. “At least now you know,” he murmured. “You’re not losing your mind, Nivera. You were right all along.”
Her throat tightened. For days she had doubted herself, felt like she was unraveling. That small acknowledgment steadied her more than anything else could have.
Alejandro exhaled through his nose, his shoulders finally dropping a fraction. He was about to ask her about the endless meetings Celeste had dragged her through when his phone buzzed in his pocket.
When he pulled it out and saw the name on the screen, he answered without hesitation, as it was a work call.
He too had had countless meetings, especially as there was a huge consignment coming and his idiot brother wasn’t there to help.
So if he was receiving a work call this soon, it could only be for something bad.
His voice shifted instantly into business, clipped and curt. “What now?”
Nivera stood quietly waiting for him to be done with his call, but she didn’t take her eyes off Alejandro, which made her see the way his expression hardened, the way a chill seemed to seep into his features as the voice on the other end spoke, and the way his eyes darkened, lips pressed into a razor–thin line.
“I’ll be there.” He ended the call with a snap and slid the phone into his pocket.

Nivera stepped forward, her brows furrowed. “What happened?”

Alejandro’s tone was flat, but the storm beneath it was unmistakable. “There’s a problem at one of the warehouses, and it’s an issue I have to handle personally.”
Her chest clenched as she spoke. “An issue?”
“Supply lines,” he muttered, though his eyes were elsewhere.
He turned toward the staircase, heading to change. Nivera followed closely, her heels echoing softly against the marble.
She couldn’t explain it, couldn’t rationalize it, but the idea of him leaving her alone here–when shadows were already circling her–was unbearable.
She needed him around, and if that meant following him around, then she had no problem with that.
“Alejandro,” she called, quickening her steps to match his long stride. “I’m coming with you.”
He paused on the first step, glancing back at her, his brow lifting as though she’d just said something absurd. “You’re not—” he began, but she cut him off.
“I’m not staying here alone. Don’t try to argue. I know I’m not crazy now, but that doesn’t change the fact that someone’s still out there. They could come here. They could…” She swallowed hard, her voice faltering. “Please. Don’t leave me alone tonight.”
The plea wasn’t loud, but it was desperate, and it was raw.
Alejandro looked at the woman in front of him, and he knew then that if he forced her to stay, she’d break.
Plus, if he did make her stay home, he would spend the entire night distracted, torn between the problem at the warehouse and the fear clawing at him over her safety.
His silence stretched, then finally, he gave a single curt nod. “Fine. But stay close to me. Always.”
He didn’t need to tell her twice. She planned on being glued to him.
Relief washed over her. She followed him to his room and watched as he stripped out of his jacket and shirt, the pale scars on his torso catching the low light.
He changed swiftly into darker clothes, something utilitarian, his movements efficient and controlled.
Once he was done changing, he followed her into her room so she could change into something much more comfortable.
Minutes later, they were in the car, the city flying past in streaks of neon and shadow.

The warehouse loomed against the night sky, massive and skeletal, its corrugated steel walls groaning in the wind.

Workers lingered outside in groups, tension etched into their faces. Alejandro’s presence snapped them straighter the moment he stepped from the car, his reputation preceding him.
He immediately headed inside the warehouse to see what had caused the fuss, all with Nivera sticking by his
