One of the large fuel drums along the far wall ruptured, igniting in an explosion. The sound was deafening, the shockwave rattling the steel beams overhead.
Alejandro reacted instantly, as he shoved Nivera down, covering her body with his own as the blast wave tore past them. Heat seared his arms, sparks showering over his back.
“Fuck!” He heard Nivera curse.
“Nivera, are you okay?” He shouted over the roar.
“Yes, are you?” It was her turn to ask.
“Hmm!” He pulled her up, dragging her to her feet.
“The fire’s spreading too quickly,” Nivera stated just as flames surged, curling upward, devouring everything in their path.
Through the chaos, it seemed they had missed the way to the exit, as everything looked hazy. They could hear the screams of workers, but they were unable to see them.
“We have to keep moving,” Alejandro said just as the ceiling groaned and a beam snapped loose.
Alejandro caught sight of it just in time and shoved her out of the way. She stumbled, hitting the ground as the beam crashed down, separating them with a wall of fire.
“Alejandro!” she screamed, her voice raw as she got up on her feet.
He tried to go toward her, but the flames leapt higher, causing a searing barrier between them.
Through the haze, he could see her face–terrified, pale, her lips forming his name.
“Nivera!” Alejandro roared, his voice ragged as the inferno cut her off from him.
And then it happened again.
Another explosion ripped through the warehouse, this one smaller but close enough to send Nivera and himself flying.
However, she was closer to the source, and so the impact was felt more by her.
He saw her body slam against the concrete floor, her head snapping back as she crumpled, remaining
motionless.
Alejandro’s world stopped, and for a few seconds, the world blurred around him as all he could hear was a ringing sound.
“Nivera,” he breathed out, the sound echoing in his head as he struggled to get to his feet.

Every bone in his body screamed at the torture he had been putting it through over the last couple of days, but he didn’t care about that.
All he cared about was the woman who had been separated from him. His Cabezota.
He felt a pair of hands on his body helping him to stand straight, but it barely registered in his head, not the people asking if he was okay, not the firefighters who were already working to put out the fire.
“Nivera!”
He caught sight of her crumpled form on the ground just beyond the fire, motionless.
His heart stopped.
“No–no, no, no.” The words tore from his throat, raw and broken.
He didn’t think, didn’t hesitate as he surged through the flames, the searing heat biting his skin as he reached her. He dropped to his knees, hauling her into his arms.
Her chest wasn’t moving, and when he went to check her pulse, he couldn’t find any.
“No. No, no, no…” His voice broke. He shook her gently, his hands trembling for the first time in years. “Nivera, don’t you dare. Don’t you fucking dare.”
But no matter what he did, she didn’t respond.
His vision blurred, but not from the smoke. A tear burned hot against his lashes, and then another, spilling freely for the first time since he was eight years old as he looked at the lifeless woman in his hands.
“Don’t you dare do this to me,” he choked, his voice breaking as he shook her lightly. “Nivera, look at me. Look at me!”
His hands trembled, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “I was a fool,” he whispered against her hair. “A fucking fool not to see it sooner. I can’t—” his chest heaved, another sob ripping through him. “I can’t live without you. You hear me? I can’t.”
He pressed his forehead to hers, his tears mingling with the soot staining her skin. “Come back to me, Cabezota. Please. I’ll give you everything, anything. Just… don’t leave me.”
A life without Nivera wasn’t one he envisioned, and it was definitely not one he had any plans of living in.
“Get me a doctor!” He yelled, not taking his eyes off her. It seemed they had put out most of the fire, as the air wasn’t as suffocating as before, but what good was it when Nivera wasn’t waking up?
“I was a fool. I should have told you. I should have admitted it. God, I can’t lose you. Not you. Anyone but you.”
The words tore out of him, ripped straight from the place he had buried every ounce of weakness.
“Nivera, I love you!” He finally said those three words, but it was too late. Nivera wasn’t there to hear it.

She had been his undoing, but she wasn’t alive to witness it. She had made him fall in love, but she wasn’t going to experience his love for her.
Tears burned his eyes, hot and relentless, spilling down his soot–streaked face as he broke apart in the middle. of a burning warehouse.
“Sir, we need to get her out!” He heard someone say through the haze.
Of course, what the hell was wrong with him? That was supposed to be his first action.
Without wasting a single second more, he carried her out of the warehouse like she was made of glass, all while praying she would be fine.
Outside, the night air was cool and clean, but Alejandro barely noticed. His world was narrowed to the woman in his arms.
Every second stretched into an eternity, but Alejandro heard nothing but the deafening silence of her stillness.
His chest felt hollow, carved out, as if the flames had stolen everything inside him.
Then-
There was a cough–weak and ragged but there regardless.
