Alice had just started the engine and was about to pull out when she spotted Emma running out of the apartment gate, clutching a bag and looking like she was in a rush.

Emma looked so anxious that Alice paused, thinking she could give her a ride if she needed one.

She still had time, and if Emma was in trouble, she wouldn’t mind helping.

But before she could even press the horn, Emma had already flagged down a cab.

So Alice didn’t step in. She just watched the taxi drive off, then turned the car around and headed back to the office.

The scene turns to Nolan Group headquarters.

The room was quiet. Ruby and Sandy sat across from each other, and the tension was thick enough to choke on.

Sandy’s shoulders shook as she cried, her head hung low

Ruby rubbed her temples, her face cold and stiff.

“I messed up, Mom,” Sandy said, her voice tight with emotion. “But I just can’t accept it. How can I?”

Daniel hadn’t hurt her, not physically. But he sent out vipers and dogs after her. It nearly scared her to death.

Nightmares haunted her sleep that night at the Nolans‘ residence.

Even now they lingered around, and she shuddered at the mere memory of them.

She had to get back at Alice. That was the only thing that kept her from breaking down.

Alice, the deputy director of tech, had built the company’s firewall from scratch. Sandy kept thinking, if she could just make Alice fall, then maybe things would feel fair again.

She knew Troy had already failed.

So she used Ruby’s name to get the company’s master key.

It could tear down the firewall in seconds.

She hadn’t planned to steal anything or hurt the company.

And she thought she could handle it.

She had learned from top hackers abroad.

She never had a reason to show off before, but she believed she was better than Troy.

Ruby let out a long breath.

“You can twiddle your thumbs and dwell over every single reason that could’ve contributed to the matter, or you can try to solve the problem at hand.”

Sandy wiped her cheeks, though her hands were shaking.

She couldn’t think of anything.

All she felt was shame.

“Mom… I don’t know what to do.”

She knew she couldn’t handle it alone.

Ruby sighed again. Her voice was calm, but firm.

“This whole mess hurt the tech department most.”

Sandy looked up fast.

“So… you want me to apologize to Alice?”

Ruby didn’t mince her words.

“You need her forgiveness.”

What she meant was clear–no matter what it took, Alice had to speak up for Sandy.

If Alice told the police it wasn’t serious, then Sandy would get off with just a warning.

At worst, maybe a short detention.

Sandy pressed her lips together and held back her anger.

“Mom, I don’t want to apologize to her. How am I supposed to hold my head up in the Nolans after this?”

Ruby looked at her and asked calmly, “Remember Henry’s granddaughter?”

Sandy paused.

Of course she did..

But that girl had left the country.

She wasn’t even coming back. What did she have to do with any of this?

“Sandy,” Ruby said, her voice cool, “Henry’s granddaughter wasn’t a part of the Nolans. That’s why when things got messy, she was the one they tossed aside.”

Sandy blinked. “But I’m your daughter. I am part of this family.”

She was supposed to be special. The future heir. The one meant to take over most of the company.

Ruby walked to the window.

The wind outside blew gently through her hair.

She didn’t speak for a moment.

Then, with her back still turned, she said quietly, “If Henry’s granddaughter had been a key figure in the company, do you think your grandmother would’ve let her go that easily?”

That’s when it clicked.

At the core, she wasn’t any different from that girl.

The only edge she had–was Ruby.

But even that wouldn’t matter if she crossed a line Ruby couldn’t cover.

If that happened, she’d be the next one thrown out.

Sandy’s lips trembled. “Mom… I’ll do it,” she said through clenched teeth. “I’ll apologize to that woman.”

Ruby gave a soft, cold laugh.

“Just apologizing won’t cut it.”

Sandy’s face froze. “Wait, you’re saying … I have to give up control too?”

Her eyes flashed like something just snapped into place.

“Oh, right, Grandma talked about it. Eric and that woman were trying to take control of the family.

“She’s always been careful around them.

“I see. I see what you’re getting at.”

Sandy felt sick.

She wanted to slap herself.

If she hadn’t made such a mess, Alice wouldn’t have any reason to fight for more say in the company.

“Mom, I’m sorry,” she said, her voice small.

Ruby saw the regret in her eyes. That was enough for now.

She stepped closer and gently patted Sandy’s shoulder.
