“We met back in school. Since then, we studied together, we lived side by side.

“You were like a big brother to me. You were my whole world. The only light in my life.”

Alice felt every hair on her arms rise. Goosebumps crawled across her skin.

Her stomach turned.

She glanced at Eric, baffled.

The man didn’t even twitch. His face stayed calm, almost bored.

Alice had to admit–he was cold. Ice cold. That kind of composure took guts.

For a moment, Eric stayed indifferent.

He’d been through countless confessions. He was used to them.

But then he saw Alice’s face.

She looked amused.

Not jealous, not even annoyed.

She looked like she was watching a drama unfold, and she couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

That set something off in him.

“As my wife,” he said, voice low and sharp, “shouldn’t you be doing something about this?”

Eric’s voice stayed cold, but the blame in it was/clear.

Alice raised an eyebrow.

So much for just watching the drama. Guess even spectators got dragged in.

She rubbed her forehead. “Why is this my problem? That girl’s your messy ex, not mine.”

Then she added with a casual shrug, “But hey, since I’m your wife, I’ll give you a little advice. If she’s rotten, toss her. Don’t let one bad apple ruin the whole crate.”

Eric said flatly, “I don’t have a crate of apples.”

Alice gave him a serious nod.

“Then don’t keep stuff bottled up. And don’t get it twisted. I’m not stopping you from putting more apples in your eye. I’m just saying, don’t let the rotten ones stick around.”

Eric stared at her like she’d missed the point completely.

Still, he said, “I don’t care what you think. You’re handling this.”

Alice blinked at him.

“Wait, what?”

That didn’t sound right at all.

Eric stayed firm. “You really have no idea how easy it is to ruin a doctor–patient relationship.

Alice narrowed her eyes. That was definitely a threat..

She had one personal rule–once she started helping someone medically, she couldn’t walk away.

It would drive her insane.

She sighed.

“Alright, alright. Let’s go, then.”

Before she left, she turned back to Irene.

“Think hard about the cauldron. And about that apology…”

Irene’s face lit up for a split second, thinking Alice had dropped it.

Maybe Yvette’s dramatic scene had finally shaken her.

But Alice didn’t let her finish the thought.

“You’d better get started now. Once I’m done with Ms. Martinez, I’ll come back and check your work.”

She walked away without another word.

Irene stood frozen, her face twisted in rage.

That woman!

Outside in the yard, Yvette’s friends had lined up like a cheer squad at a petty protest.

They had come ready to hype her up.

“In love, the one who’s not loved is the real third wheel!”

“Getting a marriage license through dirty tricks doesn’t make it real!”

“Love belongs to the one who came first!”

“She’s got the nerve to show up?”

“Yvette’s too kind. I would’ve slapped someone already!”

A sharp cry cut through the shouting.

Everyone stopped talking and turned around.

The loudest girl–the one who just threatened a punch–now had her wrist twisted painfully in Alice’s grip.

Her face scrunched in pain.

“Let go!” she yelped, on the verge of tears.

Alice slowly let go. Her voice stayed cold.

“Next time you talk shit, you can say goodbye to your wrist. Want to test me?”

The girl went pale and slipped behind the others without a word.

Alice looked at the rest.

Her eyes cut through them like steel.

No one said a word.

Their confidence drained out of them like air from a popped balloon.

All the yelling stopped.

Yvette’s whole scene fell apart in seconds.

Alice gave a dry, mocking chuckle.

“Gotta hand it to technology. You don’t even have to step outside anymore to get a migraine from people like you.”
