Just then, the taxi gave a sharp honk, did a quick U–turn, and sped off.

Eric stopped in his tracks.

Daniel’s eyes widened. He thought Alice was seriously something else.

He glanced nervously at Eric.

Gosh, his expression is terrifying!

Daniel asked carefully, “Mr. Eric, should we follow them?”

Eric’s face darkened even more.

Inside the taxi, Alice looked over at the driver in surprise.

“Emma? You’re driving a taxi now?”

Emma looked a bit flustered.

“After what happened with that customer, I got promoted to store manager. I don’t have to do night shifts anymore, so I picked up a part–time job.”

Alice caught the hint. “Having some money problems?”

Emma’s cheeks flushed. “Not really.”

Alice knew Emma had her pride.

If she weren’t in need, there’s no way she’d be working this hard.

After a moment, Alice switched topics.

“Are your parents still living out in the countryside?”

“No–wait, yeah, they are.

Alice could tell something was off.

She acted like she didn’t notice and asked, “Is your dad still selling fruit? I was planning to

visit a friend and thought I’d buy some cherries from him.”

“Huh?”

The car suddenly swerved and almost hit a flowerbed.

Emma yanked the wheel just in time.

That reaction told Alice everything.

She sighed. “What happened to your dad?”

Emma leaned forward over the wheel, tears spilling.

“He had a brain hemorrhage.”

Alice’s face tensed. “Is he still in the hospital?”

“Yes.

After crying for a bit, Emma tried to pull herself together.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to break down just now…

“It’s okay. Take me to the hospital he’s in.”

Alice’s voice was soft but firm.

Emma shook her head. “He’s still unconscious. It won’t make a difference even if we go. He won’t know.”

Besides, her father had always been a proud man. He wouldn’t want anyone to see him like that.

But Alice didn’t back down. “He was always good to me. I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t visit.”

Emma hesitated, then finally agreed.

“Okay. Let’s go.”

She started the engine.

Honestly, she hadn’t seen her father in three days.

She’d been working nonstop trying to earn enough.

But deep down, she knew they needed her company as well.

The taxi pulled up to the hospital. As they reached the ward, a doctor was stepping out

“We’ve done everything possible,” he said. “But the odds of him waking up aren’t good. You should prepare yourselves.”

Emma’s mother, Fannie Quintana, burst into tears. “Doctor, please! Isn’t there anything else you can try? He can’t just stay like this forever!”

Hearing her mother cry made Emma break down. She ran up and hugged Fannie.

“Mom, what happened to Dad?”

The doctor was still nearby. Watching them cry like that, he couldn’t help but feel a little bad.

The lead doctor sighed.

“With what we’ve got medically, there’s nothing more we can try. But….

Emma’s eyes lit up, clinging to hope. “Please tell us! Even the tiniest chance–we’ll do whatever it takes.”
