She glanced out the window once more. “It’s getting late. I should get going

Alice had argued with Eric carlier, and now her phone was loaded with missed calls and texts from Daniel’s number.

Clearly, Eric and Daniel had tracked her down to the hospital and were already waiting outside.

She had to leave. Eric still needed his needle therapy tonight.

Emma offered, “Want me to walk you out?”

Alice pointed down below. “No need. Someone is already here to pick me up.”

Emma sniffled. “So, when will I see you again?”

“When the cherries are in season.”

Alice already missed them. She was picky about fruit and only ever ate what the Quintanas grew.

As she neared the exit, wondering how to explain everything to Eric, a group of people suddenly blocked her path.

Downstairs, Eric was still scrolling through Daniel’s phone.

Daniel stood beside the car, looking at the sky speechlessly.

Eric had used Daniel’s phone to call Alice nonstop and had even sent over a dozen ‘threatening‘ texts.

Still, she hadn’t answered a single one.

If not for the fact that someone had confirmed Alice was inside the hospital, Daniel would’ve thought they had the wrong place entirely.

After a few more minutes had passed, he started to get anxious.

“Mr. Eric, do you think maybe she’s just choosing not to come out? Maybe she’s planning to stay overnight?”

Even as Daniel said it, he realized how ridiculous it sounded.

The bed back at the villa was way more comfortable than a hospital cot.

The house was quiet too–perfect for Alice.

She must be crazy if she chose to stay in a noisy, germ–filled hospital.

Eric’s expression darkened.

He tossed the phone at Daniel. “Get in. We’re leaving.”

Daniel caught it carefully, offering a nervous grin.

“Mr. Eric, I was just joking. Maybe we should stick around a little longer for Mrs. Nolan.”

Eric leaned back into the seat, his face swallowed up by the shadows, completely unreadable.

But the air around him felt ice–cold, like it could freeze anyone in place.

Alice had truly crossed the line with him.

Daniel shut his mouth and turned to get in the car, not daring to say another word.

Right then, his phone started ringing.

“That’s gotta be Mrs. Nolan,” he said quickly, grabbing it. “She was probably just tied up earlier.”
