Shirley acted like she didn’t quite catch what Alice meant.

She smiled but got straight to the point.

“Actually, I came today about the wedding gift.”

Alice pretended not to know.

“Isn’t Henry handling that?”

Shirley’s smile disappeared fast. Her face turned serious and somber.

“That’s true.”

Her voice lowered.

“Mrs. Nolan, Mrs. Irene drained her own savings for your wedding gifts.”

The message was clear: Don’t be ungrateful.

Seeing her like that, Alice guessed they already suspected who swapped those items.

They just couldn’t say it out loud.

“You’re right.”

Suddenly, Alice agreed.

Shirley looked a little surprised.

“Mrs. Nolan, what-

“I’ll tell you the truth,” Alice said, sounding resigned.

“I was so mad I had Henry look into it.

“But after Henry left, I regretted it.

“I worry Irene might get upset and hurt her health. That would be on me.”

Her words sounded a little like flattery, which made Shirley uneasy.

Alice kept going.

“Sure, it’s a box of fakes, but it still carries Irene’s goodwill. Even if the items are fake, I should wear them.”

“Oh, and I saw that emerald heart pendant before. I really like it. When the wedding gifts arrive, I’ll give that pendant to my husband.”

She glanced at Eric softly.

Eric was too shocked to speak.

Daniel, nearby, was totally dumbfounded.

He’d thought it strange when Alice suddenly bought that heart pendant at the auction.

He silently gave her a thumbs up.

She smiled from ear to ear. “Don’t worry. I’ll have everything sent over tonight.”

Alice smiled warmly. “Wouldn’t that be too much trouble for you?”

Shirley waved her off. She was more than happy to get it done quickly.

Honestly, Mrs. Nolan is a little strange. I don’t want to deal with her any longer.

Thinking that, Shirley quickly made an excuse and left.

Alice suddenly sounded almost sweet, reminding her how beautiful the heart pendant was, and saying she wanted to meet the craftsman.

Shirley agreed happily and got in her car to drive away.

As the car disappeared, the smile on Alice’s face faded slowly.

She turned to Eric.

“Why did you have Uncle Josh arrested?”

Eric raised an eyebrow. “He embezzled company money, Ruby pushed for it. What does that have to do with me?

Alice fell silent. Have I been reading too much into it?
