Ruby wiped her eyes, even though there were no tears.

Ruby shook her head fast.

“That’s not it,” Peter said, worried she’d feel bad. “They want to work with you because they can see how capable you are.”

Ruby held back a sob.

“I’m sorry I dragged you into this.”

Suddenly, Peter went quiet.

The night dragged on, and the moon hung bright in the sky.

Two people stood face to face.

Their shadows overlapped, but they felt miles apart.

There was a long pause before Peter, full, of regret, said, “I wronged you. I owe you for all of this.”

He stepped back.

“You should get going soon. If you stay too long. Sandy might start getting suspicious.”

Ruby sobbed quietly twice, “I want to watch you leave first.”

Peter instantly thought back to their college days.

After dates, they always each other off like this.

Only coldness stayed.

She carried the heart pendant into Sandy’s room.

Earlier, Sandy had seen Ruby meeting Peter upstairs.

If it were before, she might have thrown some sarcastic comments.

But now, she had no right because Ruby was doing it to cover for her.

“The auction house has always been a mystery. He runs it, but he’s always been good to me, helping me with the auction items.”

She stepped closer, voice sharp,

“You do all this behind Dad’s back, then have the nerve to hit me?”

Every word was full of malice.

Ruby trembled, hurt deeply by her daughter’s harsh tone.

She turned, staring at Sandy in disbelief.
