Daniel rolled down the window, frowning as he stared at the row of vehicles blocking the road ahead.
Four or five cars were parked deliberately across their path, clearly trying to prevent them from passing.
It was such an obvious setup that it almost felt ridiculous.
He immediately called out to the other side. “What do you think you’re doing?”
As he spoke, he reached into the side compartment and pulled out a loaded weapon.
“Mr. Nolan, Mrs. Nolan–don’t worry about me. Get out of here while you can!”
“This is probably for me,” Alice said calmly, her face was fearless, her voice steady and composed.
She looked nothing like a small–town girl out of her depth.
Daniel gritted his teeth. “No matter what happens, Mrs. Nolan–run!”
Alice let out a short laugh. “If they’re really here for me, do you think I could actually get away?”
Daniel said nothing.
She was right. The other side had numbers on their side–if they had weapons, too, escaping was out of the question.
Just then, a man stepped out of one of the cars.
“Dr. Murphy?” Daniel blinked in disbelief as the headlights lit up the man’s face.
Alice was still smiling. “Told you they’re here for me.”
Daniel was speechless.
It started to feel unsettling.
Jack walked over quickly.
Daniel thought he was hallucinating. Was that a flattering smile on Jack’s face?
He rubbed his eyes. Yep. Jack was now standing right in front of him.

“Hello, is Mr. Nolan and Mrs. Nolan with you?” he asked politely.
Alice chuckled. “Looks like you’ve had a change of heart, Dr. Murphy.”
Jack looked embarrassed.
“I thought about it for a long time before I finally understood what you meant.”
Alice didn’t call him out. “And?”

“There’s a large piece of open land behind our hospital–nearly 100 acres, give or take.”
He took a deep breath and looked at her sincerely. “If I gave that land to you, would that count as a token of goodwill?”
Alice studied him for a moment.
No wonder this old fox became a director.
She hadn’t hinted at wanting land at all, but somehow he’d figured it out.
Impressive.
“Alright. I’ll take it.”
She really needed that land for a lab she planned to build.
What she wanted to develop there was something meant for her late mentor’s enemies.
For years, she hadn’t been able to repay her mentor. Now, at last, she had the chance.
Jack exhaled sharply in relief. “That’s great news.”
He patted his chest. “So, would you be willing to come see the patient now?”
Alice raised a brow. “Sounds like a serious business.”
Jack nodded quickly. “You’re sharp as ever, Mrs. Nolan.”
He glanced toward Eric. “Will you be joining us, Mr. Nolan?”
“Of course,” Eric replied, his expression flat, though his tone was far from friendly.
Alice couldn’t help but smile. “What’s this? Off–work attitude?”
Most people had morning moods. He had post–work moods.

Charming.
Eric snorted. “You’re loud.”
“If I weren’t loud, you wouldn’t still be breathing,” she replied, smug and unapologetic.
He said nothing.
Soon, their car pulled up in front of a lavish mansion.

From the opulent décor, it was clear the place had cost a fortune, which meant the person inside wasn’t ordinary.
Once out of the car, Alice took a moment to sense the air around her.
She spoke thoughtfully, “There’s a strong flow of energy here–everything points to good things ahead. The only problem is, the front gate is off–center, letting all that positive energy slip away.”
Daniel gave her a thumbs–up.
“Wow, didn’t expect you to know all this and all the other stuff.”
She chuckled and quickly added, “I know a bit about how things work around here–not the office gossip.”
Silence fell over the car.
Jack came to the door to greet them.
“This way.”
