But the more he thought about it, the more he convinced himself she was playing dumb just to stir things

“I’ve been in this business long enough to see every kind of act. If you try anything funny, I’ll shut down. your clown act right away.”

Alice had heard enough. She raised her hand and made a time–out sign.

“Okay, seriously–what exactly did I do to piss Boston off?”

The assistant rolled his eyes. He was done with the conversation.

“Sort out your Nolan drama on your own. Don’t bring that crap here again.”

That told her everything.

Ah, the Levi incident.

“Then you’ve got the wrong girl. I don’t want anything to do with it. Now move. My coffee’s getting cold thanks to you wasting my time.”

She brushed past him, coffee in hand, and closed the door behind her without a second glance.

The assistant stood there, stunned.

He was Boston’s longtime assistant. Even when the spotlight was on someone else during Boston’s early career, having the Spencer name still gave him power.

People never shut the door in his face.

He scoffed under his breath. “Country girl. Of course decorum goes over her head.”

Still, maybe this wasn’t so bad.

Inside the booth, Alice dropped into her seat with a sigh.

He chuckled under his breath.

Then she leaned closer and gave him a straight face. “But maybe I should. If your mouth does have some sort of superpower, I can probably start an agency and charge handsomely for my … I mean our services.”

Eric didn’t

He just stared at her.

There was something in his eyes–dark and heavy, like something he didn’t want to say out loud.

Alice touched her cheek, confused.

“Did that guy outside smear something on my face?”

Eric finally looked away, slow and quiet.

Then something clicked for Alice.

She let out a sudden laugh.

“Mr. Eric, be honest–you were wondering if I meant testing your ‘superpower‘ with myouth or my face, weren’t you?”

Eric gave

her a look like she was talking nonsense, but the tips of his ears were burning red.

Alice sipped her coffee slowly, then wiped the corner of her mouth with a napkin.

“You really need to catch up with the times. They’ve probably got actual tools for that now.”

She gave a light shrug. “And I’m not a power reader. I can’t give you a reading.”

Eric’s face tightened just a little.

“Drink your coffee.”

Alice nodded, all calm and serious. “But if you ever do want to run a test, just let me know.
