Kirsten slid into the backseat with Danielle, while the driver took the front passenger spot.

Jason glanced at Danielle in the rearview mirror. “Where do you live?”

Without missing a beat, Danielle replied, “Dr. Gable, could you drop me off near the mall parking lot? My car’s parked there.”

Jason nodded, making no move to insist on driving them all the way home.

He steered the car toward the mall, heading straight for the underground parking lot.

When they came to a stop, Danielle immediately thanked him.

Jason gave her a warm, amused smile. “It’s really no trouble. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

Kirsten had been quietly observing them the whole ride.

Jason glanced at Niki and spoke again. “The weather’s getting pretty wild out there. Roads are a mess. You really shouldn’t rush to drive in this. Why not wait it out? There’s a hotel on the top floor of the mall. You can get a room, take a hot shower, keep the little one from catching a cold.”

Danielle nodded gratefully. “Thank you.”

Jason had already helped her at the hospital, and now, in this downpour, he was looking out for her again. Somehow, a simple thank you felt far too small.

She hesitated, then asked, “Would you mind if we exchanged numbers? I’d like to take you out for dinner as a thank you, when you have time.”

Jason chuckled. “No need to be so formal.”

“But sure, let’s be friends.” He took out his phone, and they exchanged contact details.

After that, Jason got ready to leave.

Danielle frowned. “Dr. Gable, are you heading out in this weather?”

He gave a brief nod. “I have to get back to the hospital. Duty calls.”

Once he’d gone, Kirsten eyed Danielle suspiciously. “So, when did you meet this handsome doctor? You’ve been keeping secrets from me?”

Danielle rolled her eyes and explained the whole story—well, almost all of it. She skipped over the part about losing her hospital room. It was old news, and there was no point in getting Kirsten worked up all over again.

Kirsten arched an eyebrow. “Looks like you’re attracting some quality admirers since your divorce. First Mr. Chapman, now Dr. Gable. You’re saying you don’t like either of them?”

Danielle couldn’t help but laugh. “Not every woman has to be head-over-heels all the time, you know.”

They decided to wait out the storm, heading upstairs to get a hotel room. Danielle and Niki took showers, and Kirsten did too.

Only after the rain stopped did they finally drive home.

The next day.

Danielle arrived at work at Ninesky.

Kirsten greeted her with a grin. “Guess what I saw in the headlines this morning?”
