The other kids’ eyes widened with awe. “Really? Your mom’s that amazing? I want to be a scientist when I grow up too.”

Soaking up the admiration, Raffy grew even more smug. “Of course it’s true! My mom even builds me model fighter jets—exact replicas of the ones on TV.”

He’d brought one to preschool before; everyone had seen it, so they believed every word.

Raffy was famous for bragging about his mom. Practically everyone at preschool knew he had a scientist mother.

Niki sat quietly off to the side, not saying a word or joining in.

When Danielle arrived, Niki immediately jumped up. “Mom!”
